Hi. Names for my baby have become a big debate in my husbands side of the family. They always hate every name we come up with. We know the sex of the baby (although we did not tell our families, we're leaving it a surprise for them). It's going to be a little boy. We both love the name Gabriel and would love for it to be his name. We picked out this name when we were still dating in high school and have never thought about changing it. What should we do? Should we tell them the name we have chosen even though we know they do not like it? Or should we wait and tell them after he's born, when they probably wont care anymore after they see him? Thanks for any advice.

I'd wait, being it can be very discouraging when people are negative at your naming choice
Once you have the baby and name him, they are more likely to accept what you've named him and go along with it. Especially being they know it's final, and that's that.

Is there a specific reason they don't like Gabriel? Was there "Family Drama" back in the day with ol' Gabe Johnson's fence reaching onto your father in laws veggie garden? ;] (my family has plenty of drama, I could never use the names Sharon, Victoria or Jack) If there is some sort bad family connotation, you should reconsider. Otherwise, it's your baby, name him what YOU love!

If you like the name, then use it. I know someone who'd daughter was having twin boys and she wanted to name one of them Otis, but the grandmother hated it. However, the name didn't change anything at all. She just disliked it.
Gabriel is a beautiful name.

I wouldn't tell them until after he is born that way they know the decision is final

Thanks. Yea there kinda is a reason my husband's dad doesn't like it. But mainly a teasing thing. When he was in school there was a guy named Gabriel and he went by Gabe. He said everyone always called him "Gay Gabe" because it just rhymed and he doesn't want our son to be teased all his life. It's a caring thought but we dont plan to call him Gabe. Just Gabriel.

I'd wait as well.
You can't please everyone with the name you choose. If you want to avoid negative feedback it is best to keep it a secret.
I love Gabriel btw. Very handsome! Best of luck

Really, any name you choose, kids will find something to tease. If it's not a name, then it's their looks or their clothes or the way they speak or pretty much anything you can imagine. That's just how kids are. So, aside from naming him something that is blatantly asking to be teased like Fanny or Gaylord, don't worry about it. But I agree with everyone else, you should wait to tell them so they know it's your final choice.

I agree with LeAnne. Definitely wait. Good luck.
