Expecting our first child in June. Not sure of the gender. Husband and I want to be surprised on day of birth. We already have a girl name picked out. Now for if its a boy... We want to use James as a middle name after my brother, and want to use Richard in some way after his father but don't want a Dick as nick name. What names are similar to Richard? We'd appreciate any suggestions. Thanks!

According to behindthename.com Richard means brave power, so you could use names with similar meanings to honor the father. You could also find similar names from different cultures. Here are some suggestions:

Ricardo James (Portuguese/Spanish)

Ryszard James (Polish)

Rhisiart James (Welsh)

Dixon James (English: Means Dick's son)

Hudson James (English: Means Hudde's son. Hudde is a pet form of Richard)

Alaric James (power)

Arnold James (power)

Basil James (brave)

Conrad James (brave)

Everard James (brave)

Ferdinand (brave)

Frederick James (power)

Garrick James (power)

Gerard James (brave)

Godric James (power)

Henry James (power)

Kendrick James (power)

Leonard James (brave)

Merrick James (power)

Reynard James (brave)

Roderick James (power)

Ulric James (power)

I hope this helps!

My dad's name is Richard and I've always adored the name Dicken // Diccon, although it does have "Dick" in there, I think it is still wearable.  I think Hardy would be a cute name to honor your dad as well.

Going off of what Katie has said, Deacon might be an option also.
