I'm reading The Iliad in my AP English Lit class and I am starting to really like some of the names of the characters. Tell me what you think. Not all names are from The Iliad, but are Greek.

Achilles ~ very strong sounding
Hector
Maeve ~ means "intoxicating"
Artemis
Athene/Athena ~ I used to hate it, but now I think it's so elegant!
Hera ~ I think it's very pretty
Iris
Helios ~ I picture a very handsome man! :)
Persephone (Per seph on ne) ~ very different, but I like it!
Prometheus ~ I love the way it sounds
Rheia
Minerva ~ also used in Harry Potter
Aphrodite
Agamemnon
Agathias
Alessandra
Alexandros
Alistaire
Menelaus

I know they are very different...I used to hate Greek names, but now I find myself a little obsessed! hehe

What are some of your favorite Greek or Mythology names?

We read parts of the Iliad last year and I loved it!

Achilles ~ I love this name, but would never use it
Hector~I'm not a fan of this one, though I like this spelling better (it was spelt Hektor in the version we read)
Maeve ~ I love this name! I would love to use it as a middle name
Artemis~ I like it, but would never use it. It has a masculine feel to it
Athene/Athena ~ my dog's name so I can't really see it on a person :P
Hera ~ Its a very nice name---and I think it fits the goddess. It has a pretty, but harsh feel all at the same time
Iris~ this is very pretty and i could see myself using it
Helios ~ I picture a very handsome man! :)--haha me too. One of my favorite combos is Alexander Helios, the name of Cleopatra and Marc Antony's son
Persephone (Per seph on ne) ~ I've always loved it since I first got into mythology. Its a bit too much to actually use for real, though
Prometheus ~ too greek for me haha
Rheia---I've seen this titaness' name spelt just Rhea, which i like better
Minerva ~ I like her Greek name (Athena) much more. Minerva sounds harsh
Aphrodite ~ I have to think of a beautiful woman because of the goddess, but really, I don't think the name is that pretty....
Agamemnon ~It was so funny to hear kids stumble over his name in class last year! It is quite a mouth full!
Agathias--not a fan
Alessandra--kind of pretty...I think...its one of those names I can't decide on haha
Alexandros---I prefer just Alexander
Alistaire--another Harry Potter name minus the 'e'. Too harsh sounding for me
Menelaus---he's one of the kings right...I'm getting my characters all mixed up haha. Don't like the name....

I love Cora, Lydia, and Helen. I actually think this would make a cute sib set.

Mythology/Latin names:
Juno (Hera's Latin name) I think its cute, especially after the movie. The character gave this old fashioned name some modern spunk (:
Zeus---my other dog's name :P
Felix--means lucky in latin, which i think is neat
Vera--means spring in latin
Stella--means start in latin
Luna--means moon in latin
Caela--means sky in latin

I love latin words that can be made into names haha.

Persephone..obviously. LOL. I have always loved the myth of Hades and Persephone. Persephone means "she who destroys light" or something along those lines. She is also known as Kore.
Helen
Eris
Hestia
Circe--I do really like this name
Calypso
Callisto
Nyx--Goddess of the night
Phoebe
Daphne---Another greek myth I like (Apollo and Daphne)
Thalia
Clio
Calliope
Electra
Psyche--Another Greek myth I like. (Eros and Psyche)
Cassandra--I think the story of Cassandra and Apollo would be interesting to tell.
Megara
Ariadne
Andromeda
Leda
Penelope
Phoenix

I always thought Maeve was Irish, not Greek.

Hector ~I used to live by a town named Hector...it sounds kinda old too me.
Maeve ~ I do love this one on a girl!!
Artemis- Reminds me of arch enemy...i have no clue why!
Athene/Athena ~ I actually kinda like this one...Athena is great.
Hera ~ It sounds very pretty :)
Iris ~ Not a fan...everytime I hear it I think of eyes.
Helios ~ Not my style.
Persephone (Per seph on ne) ~ I like this one...sounds like a new form of Stephanie.
Prometheus ~ Not a fan.
Rheia ~ Ah...I'm not sure about this one...
Minerva ~ Not a fan.
Aphrodite ~ I could see it on a dog/animal, but not on a child.
Agamemnon ~ Reminds me of a board game.
Agathias ~ Nah.

The name for the Achilles tendon actually came for the story of Achilles. He is immortal, except for one spot on his body, the part where the Achilles tendon is. He dies from a fatal arrow to that spot.

Kinda interesting huh?
