So while on our cruise there was a young woman who was from India named Avaia, and I absolutely fell in love with it! It's pronounced uh-vay-uh but the traditional spelling looks like it would be a bit confusing. So would changing the spelling to Avaya or Avayah be any better? Or would it be best to keep the original Hindu spelling?

In Hindu it means to arrive or inform of good news.

I think Avaia is pretty easy to pronounce (uh vay uh) is what I would have guessed.   Avaya would also work however.

I would pronounce Avaia 'uh-vye-uh', so in my opinion changing the spelling to Avaya would be more helpful. It's pretty, although not something I would use.

Love it! I personally wouldn't use it, but it's really pretty. It's like a Hindu twist on our Ava.

As for the spelling, I like Avaya best if you're not going with the original. The H at the end of Avayah seems a little heavy, kind of like when people spell Layla as Laylah. *shudders*

I'm in the same situation with Leia/Leya/Lea at the moment!

I think Avaia looks the best. It's the only one I pronounced correctly.

I like Avaia (with that spelling, too). I think it's easy enough to pronounce.

I kinda like Avaya best, but I think "uh-vye-uh" like rhyming with try rather than Avaya making me think "uh-VAY-uh". But I like how Avaia looks... hm! I definitely don't care for Avayah with the H though.

Changing the spelling to Avaia to Avaya would be helpful for the pronunciation of others, however their culture's spellings are different.
