This site would be pretty boring if everyone liked the same types of names. I love hearing others' ideas, particularly when a new baby's name is announced in the paper, at church, or in our family! In fact, my list of names has several that I added after hearing someone else had used them. Here are a few that have popped up in my family that I never would have considered! Although I don't think someone "owns" a name once they've bestowed it, I don't feel we could use these because they're so close in the family and too unique to copy. Do your families have already-used names you love?

Here's my list:

Alden (Old English for "old friend")
Joanna
Meredith
Oliver
Stella

  • Interests:I LOVE reading. I'm into almost every genre and generally read a book a week, if possible. I like Iris Johansen, Karen Marie Moning, Stephen King, James Patterson, Jane Austen, Charlotte Brontë, Diana Gabaldon, Kathy Reichs, and Robert Burns (every Scot's favorite author). I really love music and even got accepted to the Mason Gross School of Performing Arts at Rutgers University (my alma mater) for vocal performance. Unfortunately performance life was not for me, so I went into English Lit and French instead. Music is still a big part of my life, and I like a multitude of musical genres from Reggae to Rock to Opera. I've seen Carmen and La bohème each twice. (And I cry every time.) My husband and I also have a special place in our hearts for The Beatles.

Oh, yes we do. But some people in my family don't have a problem with copying.
I have 4 Edwards (granted they're all father/sons, but it's kinda hard to say, "Give this to Ed," when you're not sure which one they mean), 2 Brians, 3 Stevens, and 2 Williams (one goes by Bill, the other Will/Liam).

Other names that I love are

Natalie
Lily
Emily (though I have 2 cousins by this name, one is an in-law and one is my cousin)
Emma (daughter of Emily  )
Austin
Jocelyn
Collin (I LOVE this name, but my cousin name her little boy this 2 years ago - and I'm not about to copy)
Shannon

I feel lucky - in our family nobody's stolen 'our' names, though a cousin on my side named her daughter the same as another cousin's daughter (Jessica) on dh's side - but since they see each other three times a year at best, it's not much of an issue.

Mum of Jessica no. 2 (cousin on my side) did mention a couple of weeks ago how much she liked James (she's not pregnant)... I just said "Well, your daughter's got a cousin with the same name as her, would you like the same to happen to your son, if you have one?" Of course, I made a face to go with that 'innocent' question and she must've noticed I wouldn't be too happy about it

My brother used the name Kenton as a middle name for my nephew. The name is a tribute to my grandfather who passed a few years ago. I also can't use my grandfather's first name, Paul, as it's also my brother's first name! Some other names that've been taken are Isabella and Kate (actually Katelyn, but she goes by Kate).

Well, my cousin Claire stole Eden from me! lol. It's a beautiful name, but I do like my "odd" name theme going on. I also used to love the name Carina, though my aunt used that name for my newest cousin... But that's fine! I got Sailor!

I don't think anyone in my family has a name that I'd really be fond of using at least as a first name. both my grandma's were Mary's. My grandpa was Ralph. My dad Peter, my uncle Paul, My mom Karen, My aunts Allison and Roxanne....Cousins Kimberly, Ashley, Jason, brian...my brother David...my little sister Taylor.

I might consider some of them for middle names....but I don't know. I don't think they really fit well with the names that I like.

  • Interests:More than anything else in the world I love being with my family, which includes my amazing husband and our three gorgeous daughters. We are currently expecting number four, and are so excited! I am of course a mother first, but I am a writer second. I am a nut about names and etymology in general. I love reading; I’m a sucker for both the more modern fantasy books, like Harry Potter, and the also classics, like Shakespeare. Music is another thing that I could’ve live without, and I have to say my tastes definitely lean towards modern rock: Nickelback, Hinder, Papa Roach, and Theory of a Deadman are my very favorites. Not too big on television, but I couldn’t live without Lost. I also love cars (and driving them!), and I am the proud “mommy” of a Ford Mustang. I’m also pretty big on talking and I like to see myself as friendly, so I hope to see you around the boards!

I meant to post in this thread days ago but I completely forgot!

There’s a lot of names in my family that I really love. My grandpa and uncle have my two favorite boys’ names -- Jake and Austin -- and I’m determined to use them anyway because I’m just that stubborn ;) My cousins are named Jacoby, Karl, Hayden and Adriana… I love their names, too; probably would never use them though, because I’m insanely close to those four. Helena is another family favorite and is my great-grandmother’s name and my grandma’s middle… I think it’s one I’ll probably use someday

One name that I really love is Gavin, but I’m not sure how to ever go about using it because it was supposed to be my brother’s name prior to my dad dying, and mom’s still pretty sensitive about it for obvious reasons. I might bring it up someday, but I just don't know.

Josh had a grandpa named Remy… that’s a name I’m slowly starting to get attached to as well.

Also: my best friend Rachel has two little ones, Vienna Rachelle and Emmett Nicholas. I never planned on using either, but I still love both of their names :D

In my family its not a problem reusing names.
The names of my cousins on my mom's side, my sisters and me are as follows...

Jessica Elizabeth
Katherine Ann
Sara Elizabeth
Hannah Katherine
Madeline Claire
Claire Nicole
and Cori Noel

A lot of these names were also passed down from older generations...Katherine, Ann, Claire, & Sara.
I really don't see a problem with it as long as the first names are different and they are called by a different name. I'm sure me and my sisters will carry on a few of the traditional family names. If you hadn't guessed, my family is ALL girls.

Lola (Name of my third older sister)
Luke (Name of my nephew)
