Okay,, so I want to use the name Allena/Allyna to honour my (deceased) great uncle,, Alan.

Pronounciation - nobody has got this so far,, so here are three ways to try and explain it:
  • Alan-uh (like Alan,, the boys name,, and 'uh' - the noise a guy makes when you kick him where it hurts laugh.gif).
  • Like Elena,, but with 'al' at the beginning instead of 'el'.
  • Al-lyn-uh.
It's kind of a cross between the three. I really should record myself saying it and upload it at some point.

How hard is it to pronounce? Which spelling would make it easiest to pronounce?

I like Allena a ton better than Allyna, but I think Alena or Alanah look better in my opinion, but you would probably have problems with pronounciation so Allena would be the best bet. I hope this helps you, even a little, lol.

I voted for other, so I just want to be clear. I think Alena is the best option to get the sound you want (at least the one I'm hearing in my head). The pronunciation uses 'Al' like the boys name instead of 'all' like the word... so I think the look/sound of Alena is nicer and more fitting. Allena makes me want to say it like All-en-uh or All-ee-nuh. And since your great uncle's name only has one L, it makes even more sense to only use one. I definitely wouldn't use the 'y' though. Makes me think it is said Al-ee-nuh. Huh. I don't think I was very clear, but I gave it a shot.

I think as long as you keep the two LLs then it should be fine...If you go with Alena/Alyna then it would be mis-pronounced as (ah LYN ah) instead of (AL in ah)

I think both would work, but I do like Alena a lot as a variation! :B

Youre def going to have mispronunciation problems with both spelling you have chosen....i thought when i first read them without reading what you wrote you wanted it pronounced "Uh-Lee-Nuh"....but if its after an Alan then....

Allanah, Alana, Alanna would be my choice

Alana/Alanna/Allana/Allanah/Alanah/etc. will always be pronounced uh-LAH-nuh, as that's a somewhat common name.
I think Alena would most commonly be pronounced uh-LAY-nuh or uh-LEE-nuh.
I would assume Allyna to be pronounced uh-LIN-uh.
But I understood right away how you wanted to pronounce Allena.
Chances are, you're always going to have to correct people no matter how you spell it, but once you tell them how it's pronounced, they'll probably remember.
