Malcolm:
Gender: M
Origin of Malcolm: Scottish
Meaning of Malcolm: "devotee of St. Colomba"
Malcolm's Popularity in 2009: #602
I really love then name, but I worry a bit about "Mal" as a nickname. I think it is fairly common knowledge that it means "bad" in Spanish. Also, I think the nickname may sound a bit feminine (I knew a girl named Malorie who went by Mal). I'm more worried about the femininity than the meaning. I was thinking Malcolm Zachary or Joshua Malcolm.
WDYT of Malcolm?

Probably qualifies me as "nerd", but I think of Captain Mal (from Firefly, who is a guy) when I hear the NN "Mal". I know both a Mallory and a Malcolm who have gone by Mal - seems like it could go either way for me.
I actually didn't know it meant "bad" in Spanish. I knew it meant "bad" in French. But I think the whole name Mallory means "sea of bitterness" and that hasn't stopped them. I like both Malcolm Zachary and Joshua Malcolm.

It seems a bit old fashioned to me, so I am not a huge fan of the name itself, but Malcolm Zachary sounds really nice

I also think of Malcolm "Mal" from Firefly. I have a good friend named Malerie as well and we call her Mal sometimes. But despite that I don't see the nn Mal as being overly feminine or masculine. I think it works as a nice nn for both genders.

I like it!
It has a handsome, though somewhat nerdy sound to it
I don't think the nick name Mal would sound too feminine! Gender neutral, I think. Though if you don't want him called Mal, you can try Malc, Mac, Al, etc. Though I know a boy named Malachy called Mal/Mally/Mally-wally so I think it's the most adorable name for a boy!!
Malcom Zachary and Joshua Malcom sound so handsome!
