Hi All!

My name is Steve Ketchum and I am expecting a baby boy in May.  My wife and I are really excited but there is one thing we are struggling with; giving our son a new name or continuing the tradition of my name.  I am a Jr. and it meant a lot to me to be named after my father.  I always grew up thinking I would name my kid Stephen Ketchum III but now I am not so sure.  Since my father is in good health and we have no good nicknames we like, we know it will be confusing when we are all together (which is often since we don't live far from one another).  This is my only chance to continue the tradition, as we don't want any more kids since we have a daughter already.

The other alternative is Jack, which I think sounds cool when put together with my last name.  I just can't get past the thought that this is my only chance to continue a tradition that I loved as a kid.  I don't want this to be about me either, it is very important that my wife is happy but she said this is my decision and she likes both names.  I need help!  Anyone have any strong opinions one way or the other?

Thank you!

Steve

Hi!
I'm not a fan of repeated names in the family, so I think you should pick a new name and consider Stephen as a middle name, if you like. Did you name your daughter after her mother (your wife) or someone from her maternal family side? If the answer is no, I would definitely go with Jack.
I also prefer the name Jack.

Good luck!

If you and your wife both like it and its important to you, do it. You could do Stevie for a nickname. Tripp and Trey are both common nicknames for a boy who is the third.

I think either way, you'll be using a name you like so do what feels right. You could always use your/your father's middle name with the 1st name Jack or Jack Stephen. I wish you lots of luck!
