In my elective, Developmental Psychology, I meet Alfie Gideon Book. He is 20 years old and lives close to my house so we begin walking home after our classes on some days.

Soon we go on our first date. Alfie takes me ice-skating and although I am horrible at skating, by the end of the night we are having so much fun. Alfie and I continue dating for the remainder of university and after graduation we move into an apartment together. Alfie gets a job working with the Police Criminal Investigation Unit and I start graduate school.

A year after graduating, Alfie is doing really well and loving his job and I am learning so much and becoming very passionate about Physiotherapy. We begin to talk about getting married and then on a Tuesday at 2 in the morning, Alfie takes me to the park where the outdoor ice skating rink is in the winter. Then he gets down on one knee and proposes! I was not expecting it at all but instantly I say yes! And then I share some news with him; I'm pregnant!

 

We plan a small and intimate wedding, and skip the honeymoon to save money and to ensure we are ready for the baby. The wedding is teal-and-white themed and only 6 weeks later our baby is born! Darcy Philomena Book (born February 3, 2018) is absolutely precious with a full head of curly brown hair and gorgeous blue eyes.

Two years after having Darcy, we are all so happy. I am six months into a new job as a Physiotherpist for the local Recreation Center, and Alfie recently was promoted at his job. After a few days of intense nausea I go to see the doctor. I had already taken a pregnancy test and it came back negative so I wanted to figure out what was going on. Turns out it was a false negative and I am pregnant with baby number two!

 

On the same day Alfie was also at the doctor to receive test results regarding a potential medication he might start taking. When he gets home I am bursting with excitement and tell him the wonderful news. He is overjoyed (and so is Darcy!) but almost immediately after he becomes somber and gets a pained look on his face. He tells me that he has lung cancer from secondhand smoke.

 

We are both devastated but Alfie promises he will fight with everything he has and he will do it for our unborn baby, Darcy and me.

 

William Alfie Book is born on March 17th, 2021 and he is loved and cherished by all our family.

The next three years after having Will are tough and a bumpy ride. Darcy is now six-years-old and Will is three. Darcy is active, lively and loves playing soccer. Will loves to read and is constantly making up stories.

 

Alfie has gone into remission once in the last three years but two weeks ago he caught the flu and has been in the hospital almost full-time. We all miss him incredibly. Early on a Saturday morning, Alfie's doctor calls me and tells me I should bring Darcy and Will in to see Alfie because an unexpected infection has caused things to go downhill fast. Three hours later, after saying goodbye to the kids and saying goodbye to me, Alfie passes away. I am devastated but I know I must stay strong for Darcy and William.

 

A week later, I am still feeling very physically sick, just like I felt before I found out I was pregnant with Will. I decide to take a pregnancy test even though I know it is probably just the grief and I am utterly astounded when it comes back positive; I am 8 weeks pregnant and I had no clue.

 

The pregnancy is so tough and trying but on May 11th, 2025 I give birth to Eleanor Ever Book. She is the spitting image of her dad and we are incredibly blessed to have her.

A little more than a year after having Elle, and two years after losing Alfie, the loneliness is still very much there, but the grief has numbed slightly. I am sure I am not ready to fall in love again, but then I meet Gregory Ewan Anderson. He is a personal trainer and somehow we get into a lengthy conversation about how hectic and wonderful life is with young children, and how hard it is to be a single parent. Gregory is 30 years old and has two-year-old twins: Cormac Lucius and Ruby Aurelia.

 

Greg and I quickly become friends, not expecting a relationship to blossom. However, eventually we end up dating and then after 6 months we introduce Darcy, Will and Elle to Mac and Ruby. We date for three years and our kids become best friends. Ruby and Elle are especially close and dream about becoming real sisters. Darcy likes having Greg around but is still wary and does not want him to replace Alfie.

 

Greg completely surprises me, when on my 36th birthday he proposes! He sheepishly tells me that he asked Darcy, Will and Elle for their permission to marry me after clearing it with Ruby and Mac. We move into a 6-bedroom house and a year later have a simple backyard wedding with Darcy as my maid-of-honour, Ruby and Elle as flower girls and Mac and Will as ring bearers.

 

Only a few weeks after the wedding I find out that Greg and I are expecting our first baby. On April 21st, 2031 Finnian Sage Anderson is born and our family is complete.

Hello! My name is Callista Jade Elven and I am 22 years old. I go to Southern Nazarene University where I am majoring in child psychology. After I graduate I plan to become a children's counselor. I met my boyfriend, Adrian Xavier Black in my Algebra class. He's 22 like me and has his own apartment a few blocks away from campus.He's also majoring in psychology, though he plans to work with adults rather than children. We were instantly attracted to one another and our first date was a picnic in Eldon Lyon Park, near SNU. After we graduate I move in with Adrian.

Adrian and I are now both 25 and we graduated from SNU a year ago. I work as a child psycologist and Adrian is an adult psychologist. As our financial situation gets more stable, Adrian and I have begun to talk about marriage. To be honest I've been feeling guilty about us living together when we aren't married. I know my parents would be disappointed. One night Adrian takes me to Eldon Lyon park, where we had our first date, gets down on one knee, and proposes to me. I am shocked, but excited and of course I say yes! Then, with a nervous smile I reveal to Adrian that I'm pregnant. We decide to have a small, quick, intimate wedding with just our relatives and a few close friends and not go on a honeymoon so that we will be living in a stable, married environment when our baby is born. Two years later Adrian, Cullen, and I are a happy little family. I start to feel nauseous but I think it's just the flu so I don't go to the doctor until I feel extremely nauseous for more than a few days. At the doctor's office, they have me take a pregnancy test, and as I've begun to suspect, I find out that I am pregnant with our second child. Coincidentally, Adrian has also just had a doctor's appointment to check his blood pressure and other routine things, so when we get home that day we both have stories to share. I tell Adrian I am pregnant and he is overjoyed. Sensing the excitement, little Cullen starts clapping delightedly. Then Adrian gets this pained look on his face and in that instant I somehow know my world is about to turn upside down. Adrian tells me he has been diagnosed with lung cancer caused by all the second-hand smoke he inhaled as a child in a home where both parents smoked. My heart shatters and for the next few days all I can do is cry and pray and rage to God that itnisnt fair that he got cancer when he's never smoked a day in his life. Adrian tells me he will fight this thing with everything he's got and I pull myself together when I realize how much my behavior is frightening Cullen. I know somehow God will get us through this. Just after Cullen turns three I give birth to a healthy baby boy, who we name William Xavier, "Liam". His middle name Xavier honors Adrian.

It's been three rough, bumpy years. Adrian and I are both now 31, Cullen is 6, and William is 3. Cullen is a very active little boy who loves sports. He plays basketball. Little Liam is a very, sweet, low-maintenance little boy. Though we try not to dwell on it, Adrian's cancer is getting worse. It gets to the point that he has to stay in the hospital almost full-time. It's so hard, because our two little boys miss him so much when they aren't visiting him. Then, one day, the doctor calls and tells me to come in and bring the kids, because things are going down-hill fast. It is the worst moment of my life as the heart monitor slows to a stop. The kids and I are devestated, but I know my kids need me and I have to stay strong and not slip into depression for therir sake. 

A few days after Adrian's funeral I begin to feel sick again. It reminds me of how I felt before Liam was born, but I wonder if it's my grief making me feel this way. I take a pregnancy test just to be safe, and to my utter shock, it comes back positive. I'm filled with so many mixed emotions because I love my children so much and we had dreamed of having more before Adrian got sick, but I can't bear the thought that Adrian will never meet our child. When Cullen is 7 and Liam is 4, my third child is born. It is another boy and I name him Elijah Valor. His middle name represents how I have to be brave for my kids.

Elijah is a year old now, Cullen is 8, and William is 5. It has been nearly two years since Adrian died and I'm almost certain I'll never fall in love again, or at least not this soon, but I guess God's plans for my life are different than my own. One day at work, I run into (literally, that's what happens when you don't look where you're going), a man. His name is Nicholas Alexander Barrington and he is 30 years old, which is three years younger than me. He is also a child psychologist, and was working with the older brother of the little girl I was working with.  We start a conversation about our jobs and end up talking about our home lives and how crazy life with kids can be sometimes. I found out he has recently gotten divorced and has full custody of his five-year-old daughter, Xanthe Aurelia. I tell him about my kids and about how I lost Adrian. We slowly become friends, but neither of us feels we're ready for a more serious relationship yet. But our feelings continue to grow and eventually we introduce our children to each other and to each other's kids and begin a very close dating relationship. We date for three years and our kids grow up together and become great friends. Liam and Xanthe, who are the same age, are always whispering about becoming siblings and all of my kids have asked whether Nick wil become their new daddy. Cullen thinks Nick is nice but is worried that he is trying to replace his father. Liam, sadly,  can barely remember Adrian and Elijah never met him so they both adore Nicholas. Xanthe took to me instantly because the poor girl's mother was an alcoholic and never really cared for her so she has never experienced a mother's love before. I have to admit that even though I love my three little boys to bits, it's nice to experience having a little girl around. 

 

After we've dated for three years, Nicholas proposes to me at my house with all the children around. He sweetly admits that after asking Xanthe, he asked my children for permission to marry their mommy.  We have a nice, but simple wedding a year later with Xanthe as the flower girl, Elijah as a ring bearer, Liam as a Bible bearer, and Cullen as one of Nicholas' groomsmen. We move into a bigger house together, and everyone is overjoyed. I feel like our family is complete when aa few weeks after the wedding I find out I'm pregnant. Nine months later I give birth to a beautiful baby boy, who we name  Kieran Ash. All his older siblings love him, even though Xanthe was kind of hoping for a baby sister.

Lillian and Asher met during their senior year of college.  They were taking the same ceramics class to fulfill their art gen ed and were both terrible at it.  For their first date, Asher invited Lillian to his apartment to make pizzas together.  They dated for the remainder of the year, and after graduation, Lillian moved in to Asher's apartment.

 

Lillian got a job as a medical researcher, and Asher as an editor.  Three years after they graduated, when Lillian was 24 and Asher was 25, Asher proposed to Lillian while the two were on their college campus for a mini reunion with friends.  Lillian said yes, and to Asher's surprise, she had news of her own - she was pregnant!

 

The two decided they wanted a small, intimate wedding with close family and friends.  Their wedding color scheme was gray and pale pink, and they decided not to honeymoon with a baby on the way and save their money for the costs of a new member in their household.

 

One month after the wedding, Lillian gave birth to a healthy baby boy named Rhett Ethan Bingham.

 

Two years later, Lillian scheduled an appointment at her doctor's office because she had been feeling nauseated.  The doctor told her she was pregnant, and she hurried home to share the good news with Asher.  Asher had a doctor's appointment that day, too, to get his blood pressure checked.  When Lillian shared her news, Rhett sensed the excitement and jumped up and down, clapping his hands.  Asher took Lillian aside to share news of his own - that he had been diagnosed with lung cancer due to the secondhand smoke he inhaled as a child.  Though Asher did not smoke, both of his parents did heavily.  Lillian was devastated by the news, but Asher assured her that he would fight the illness.  Shortly after Rhett's third birthday, Lillian gave birth to a daughter named Charlotte Ashley Bingham.

 

For the next three years, the Bingham household was quite hectic.  Lillian starting working part-time so she could accompany Asher to his doctor's appointments and take care of the kids.  Rhett had started school and was at the top of his class, but he had a tendency to cause trouble in the classroom - talking when he wasn't supposed to, making a mess of his work station, daring other kids to try dangerous stunts on the playground.  With the plethora of visits Lillian made to the school counselor's office to discuss Rhett's behavior, Charlotte felt jealous and as a result, acted whiny and needy, clinging to her mother's legs at all times. 

 

Lillian tried to deny it, especially around the kids, but Asher's cancer was only worsening.  Eventually, he had to stay in the hospital full-time, only able to see his family during visiting hours.  Rhett and Charlotte were understandably confused and sad that their father wasn't around the house anymore.  One day, Lillian received a call from Asher's doctor telling her to come to the hospital immediately.  Lillian, Rhett, and Charlotte said tearful goodbyes to their father that night.  Lillian was of course devastated but, for the sake of her children, she fought to stay strong and provide them with as much normalcy as possible at home.  About a month after Asher's funeral, Lillian realized she had been feeling off and took a pregnancy test, which was positive.  She was overwhelmed with conflicting emotions: joy, because she had hoped to have another child with Asher, but devastation, because this meant Asher would never meet his third child.

 

When Rhett was 7 and Charlotte 4, their younger sister was born.  Lillian named her Adelaide Mercy Bingham and nicknamed her Addie.

 

Lillian was convinced she would never date again after losing Asher, and so she delved into her work and taking care of the kids.  A year after Addie was born, however, Lillian met a man at work named Victor Malcolm Sorensen who was recently divorced with full custody of his kids, a two-year old-son named Adam Cato Sorensen and a one-year-old daughter named Ruby Aurelia Sorensen.  They bonded over being single parents together and became friends.  Lillian started to realize she was developing romantic feelings for him and felt guilty and ashamed.  But after introducing Rhett, Charlotte, and Addie to Adam and Ruby and seeing how well they got along, Lillian admitted her feelings for Victor, which he reciprocated, and the two started dating.

 

After three years of dating, Lillian overheard Rhett and Charlotte whispering about the possibility of Lillian and Victor getting married.  Rhett liked Victor but was hesitant about the idea of getting a step-dad, fearful that Victor would be a "replacement" for Asher.  Charlotte and Addie adored Victor, as they had fewer memories of their biological father.  Victor's ex-wife was an alcoholic and very negligent toward her children, so Adam and Ruby viewed Lillian as the mother figure they never really had.

 

One day, at a joint family dinner at Lillian's house, Victor proposed to Lillian.  He said he had asked all five kids if they were okay with it and they said yes.  Lillian was thrilled, and the two were married in a simple but beautiful ceremony, with Adam as ring bearer and Addie and Ruby as flower girls.  Charlotte and Rhett performed in the ceremony by reading passages from the Bible that Lillian and Victor selected.  

 

Only a few weeks after the wedding, Lillian realized she was pregnant!  Victor and Lillian welcomed their first child together, a boy they named Oliver Dune Sorensen.

My name is Sloane Claire Etherington and I'm 20 years old. I've recently started university and I'm majoring in Music, I'd like to one day compose scores for movies. In one of my core, non-major-related classes, I meet a guy, Alfred "Alfie" Xavier Barclay, and he's 21 years old. Alfie lives in his own apartment only a few blocks away from our campus. He's majoring in Psychology and wants to be a clinical psychologist. The two of us hit it off almost immediately, and that weekend, we go on our first date - A picnic in a park on the campus' quad. It was lovely, Alfie set up the whole basket with the checkered table cloth, a bottle of sparking apple cider, a fruit salad, fun finger sandwiches and some more. It was really lovely. We date for the remainder of university, two years, then we move in together into Alfie's apartment.

 

It's been a year since I graduated university, and I'm now 23 years old and Alfie is 24 years old. We've now both got jobs in the fields we majored in. I'm working as an Assistant Film Scorer while Alfie works as a Youth Psychologist.

 

As we're beginning to get financially stable, Alfie and I begin talking about getting married. One evening, Alfie  takes me  back to where our first date was, on one knee, and he proposes. Excited and not expecting a proposal at all, I say yes, but smile and admit that I also have news to share with him--I'm pregnant!

 

We decide to quickly plan a small, intimate wedding, skipping a honeymoon afterward, with just close friends and family, so that we can get married before the baby comes along and chaos ensues.  We ended up going with a light green and brown theme for the wedding.

 

Just a month after the wedding, Alfie and I welcome our beautiful baby girl - Alice Ethan Barclay into the world. She's darling and precious with ten perfect fingers and ten perfect toes and Alfie and I could not be more in love with her if we tried. 

 

Two years later, Alfie and I are enjoying our nice little family with Alice, who is now two years old, when I feel nauseous. Thinking it's just the flu, I don't decide to go to see a doctor until I start feeling extremely nauseous for more than a few days. At the doctor's office, they have you take a pregnancy test, and as I'd begun to suspect, I found out that I was pregnant with our second child.

 

Ironically, Alfie had had a doctor's appointment to check his blood pressure among other routine things, so when the two of us met up at the house we'd bought shortly after Alice was born that evening, we both had stories to share. I tell Alfie that I'm pregnant, and he's overjoyed. Even Alice starts clapping, sensing the excitement. Then Alfie gets a pained look on his face and tells me his own news: he has lung cancer from all the secondhand smoke he took in as a child, both of his parents smoked, but he never did.

 

I spend the next few days crying, but Alfie  promises he'll fight with all his might. It's a rough few months with lots of doctor's appointments, I cry often and clutch Alice close to me. I leave angry voice mails to his parents and spend hours on the phone with my mother, sobbing. Talking about how I'm not sure what I'll do if I lose Alfie, he's my other half, the light of my life.

 

Just two weeks after Alice's third birthday, Alfie and I welcomed our second daughter, Emily Alfreda-Xena Barclay into the world and she is just as perfect as Alice was when she was born.

 

It's been three bumpy years. Alice is now six years old and in first grade, and Emily is now three years old. Alice is a super active little girl, she loves sports but her favorite one to play is soft ball while Emily loves to be read to and look through picture books non-stop, her favorite time is with her daddy, working on her reading skills by reading her favorite picture books to Alfie.

 

At this point, I try not to think about it, but Alfie's cancer is getting worse. It gets to the point where he has to stay in the hospital nearly full-time. Alice and Emily miss their daddy whenever they aren't visiting him there. One day, the doctor gives me a call and asks me to come in, recommending I bring the kids, because things are going downhill fast. 

 

The goodbye is painful as the heart monitor machine slows to a stop. Alice, Emily and I are devastated, but I keep it together and refuse to slip into a depression for my girls, they just lost their father and I need to be strong for them. 

 

Only a few days after Alfie's funeral, I start to feel sick again. It's like it was before Emily was born, but I'm wondering if the loss of Alfie is making me feel that way. I take a pregnancy test just to be safe, and, shockingly, it comes back positive. I'm filled with mixed emotions, because I love my kids dearly and Alfie and I had always wanted a big family together - talking about it often before he got sick, but the fact that Alfie wasn't going to be able to see our third child come into the world, be there for him or her...but I knew I wanted this baby more than anything, this last piece of Alfie.

 

When I go to the doctor and find out I'm expecting a little boy, I'm inconsolable and have to call my mother to come pick me up from the doctor. My son will never know his father and Alfie will never get to see his little boy. It's a struggle, but with strong and supportive family and seeing a therapist bi-weekly, I somehow start to get through it and be strong and even start to feel real joy and just in time for the birth of my little man, I decide to use Alfie's boy first name pick from when we were pregnant with Alice, Levi, for him and then for his middle name, Solace for the joy and comfort he brings into all of our lives after Alfie's loss, Levi Solace Barclay is born hearty and healthy.

 

It's been a year since Levi was born, which is nearly two years after Alfie's death. I'm certain that I might not ever fall in love again--and certainly not this soon--but fate seems to disagree when I literally run into a man at work, Peter Miles Hansen. We somehow get roped into a conversation about how crazy life is with kids and whatnot, and I find out that Peter's recently divorced with full custody of his son, Adam Tiberius Hansen - two years old. Peter is  30 years old and works as a Film Director.

 

 

Peter and I slowly become friends, both not certain we're prepared for a relationship, but our feelings for each other grow and eventually we introduce our children to each other and each other's kids and have a very close dating relationship. 

 

We date for three years as our kids grow up together and become great friends. Adam and Levi are constantly whispering about becoming siblings, and Alice, Emily and Levi are constantly asking if Peter will be "a new daddy," though they have differing opinions. Alice thinks Peter is nice but feels like he is trying to replace their daddy, while Emily and Levi adore him most, as they don't remember Alfie as clearly. Adam loves me, since his mother was an alcoholic and never really cared much for him, and hasn't been around at all since the divorce to see him.

 

After those three years of dating, Peter  pops the question over at my house with all of our kids around. Peter admits that, adorably, he'd asked Alice, Emily and Levi for permission to marry their mommy after clearing the idea with Adam. We move into a bigger house together and have a nice but simple wedding a year later, with our kids as the ring bearers and flower girls. Everyone is overjoyed. We feel as if our mixed family is complete when, only a few weeks after the wedding, we discover that I'm pregnant with Peter's child. Nine months later, I give birth to a beautifully healthy baby girl, that is very much loved by her older siblings, Phoebe Azalea Hansen.
