My CSI Fan-fic is on hold because I am unable to choose the number of kids in the family. I really want Sara and Catherine to have a large family, but I am unsure what a large family is. As I am one of three kids I think of any family with four or more as a large family. Then with a bigger family I have to figure out different personalities for the characters, which becomes overwhelming when there are tons of kids.

I like these numbers for my story:
- 5 kids (7 family members)
- 6 kids (8 family members)
- 10 kids (12 family members)
- 12 kids (14 family members)
- 13 kids (15 family members)

What do you think is a good number for a big family?

One character that I’ve already created, and will be using, is the ‘middle child’. While she does not have to be in the exact middle, she is the youngest girl before all the boys are born. She is the one that Sara and Catherine have a tendency to forget. She is the quietest member of the family, until being the ‘middle child’ becomes too much and she acts out.

I agree with you; coming from a family of three kids, about four and up is large to me. I think that six is a good number for your story. It communicates the idea that your family is a large one, without it being too unmanagable. Good luck!

I myself am also one of three. Even with just the three of us our Mom was pulled in a million different directions. Our family sometimes felt too big, especially since I had friends that were mostly only children.

I, being the oldest, was always doing things first. I was the first to walk, talk, give our Mother a good scare, need stitches, climb out second story windows, climb trees, play sports, have friends, act out. I was the first in everything. I am also the only girl. I wasn’t allowed to play team sports unless they were ‘girl’ sports, so no football for me. My grades were always at the top of my class.

My first brother, the middle child, was the spoiled child. He was always getting into trouble. He was better at making friends, he had at least ten times the number of friends I’d ever have. He was always the one that was allowed to play sports on teams. His grades weren’t the best.

My second brother, the youngest, was the baby. He was the shy quiet one that was attached to Mom. He was always small for his age. He didn’t have friends. He preferred staying inside with his toys.

So you see our family was a little disorganized. I was the forgotten child. My first brother was the praised one. My second brother was the only one to fall into the correct category, the baby.

No matter the number of the kids, or the order, there is always a way to make it fit to the idea in your head.

Sorry for rambling, but I hope this helps some.

I also like the idea of six, but I think it would be nice if she had 3 sisters and 3 brothers, so 7 may work better. Good luck, I hope this helped!

I thought maybe some examples of what I was think when I choose these numbers would help people understand my thinking.

This is about a blended family that is made up of kids from more then Sara and Catherine’s kids. Most are from Sara’s brother and sister. Her brother willing gave his daughter(s) to Sara so he didn’t have to tell his wife about the affairs he’d had. Her sister dies in a car accident and leaves her children to Sara.
