I grew up watching Gilmore Girls so to me, Rory was always a girls name.
Then I started watching 8 Simple Rules and going on baby name websites and I realized most people consider it a boy name.
Just read up about it on nameberry and saw "In London or Liverpool, naming your daughter Rory is like naming her....Roger."
I live in the US so I guess it shouldn't matter too much but, it did bring me down a bit because now I'm torn.

Should I just give up on it being a girls name and take it off my list?
Or see if I could maybe convince myself to love it on a boy?
Or say 'screw it' and keep it on my girl list?

Side question(s):
If I do keep it as a girls name, is it fine to stand alone or is it better as a nickname? If so, which name? I used to love Aurora as a full name with it but it's gotten too popular and I think Lorelei (like GG) is too much of a stretch plus I don't care for the name. Are there any others?
And what about for a boy, is Rory fine for a stand alone name? Or is there a boy name that Rory is a nickname from?

I like it as a boys name but also as a nickname for a longer name.. Like aurora.. which i agree is getting rather popular and Lorelai/Lorelei i think is quite a bit popular too! other names it would go well as a nickname for are.. Aurelia, Gloria, Aurorette (a twist on aurora) Derora, DeroriceLaura, Lorraine/Lorayne, Amoura,Victoria, Mallory(i do really like this name with rory as a nn) Romilly..

And for a boy... Theodore could have rory as a nickname.. Emory- Rory.. i like this one.. Gregor or Gregory.. Roarke... Rorison (a twist on jackson/harrison kind of names?i would have said it as roar-ee-son too) Conroy, Forrest, Cormac.. Roland, Rosario, Aurelius, Riordan, Rhydian, Rordan (a twist on jordan), Lorenzo, Lorcan Corbin, Torin, Warren, Orson, Orlando.

Out of the girl names you listed, I could maybe see myself doing Lorraine with it. Or maaaaybe Victoria (but I've known a Victoria or two that make me hesitant)

HOWEVER, after I posted this, I looked at the meaning of Rory some more (red king) and thought if by some chance I end up with a red-headed son (I have it on both sides of my family and people say I have a red highlights) Rory could be a fun choice.
But to see you mention Roarke is amusing! I've kept Rourke in my 'potential middle names' list to honor family but have been up in the air with what do with it recently because of my new naming preferences/plans. I think it could be cute to name a son (especially red-headed but not even maybe!) Rourke and call him Rory. Didn't even consider that until now, so thank you!

There were 471 girls and 851 boys given the name Rory in the US last year.  I also found 114 girls named Rori (no boys).  Together that puts the split at 40/60 girls verses boys.  And this wouldn't including the number of girls named Aurora, Lorelei, etc. possibly going by the nickname Rory.

Based on these numbers, Rory is unisex and can't be pigeon-ed holed as a male or a female name.  If you love it for a girl, go for it.

Other possible full name contenders...

Victoria

Theodora

Eleonora

Zipporah

Orianna

Astoria

Ellorie/Ellory

Wqay late to this thread, but when I see Rory I automatically think of Rory Williams from Doctor Who.

My first experience of the name Rory was as a boy's name from a main character for a while on Doctor Who (Rory Williams).  Then I heard about Rory Gilmore from Gilmore Girls and found it a little weird as a girl's name at first, but I like it now.  There is also a character on DC's Legends of Tomorrow named Rory and a character on The Arrow named Rory, both men.

Honestly, I like it works both ways.  I lean more towards liking it as a boy's name, but I do think it is very pretty on a girl as well.  I personally think that it's one of those names that could go either way.  Use it on a girl if you want to. :)  It's a nice name either way.

In the case of Legends of Tomorrow, Rory is actually the character's last name, but that's what he's usually called.

I always thought for a girl it was a nickname for Rosemary.
