Aidan / Aiden - I know Aidan is the original spelling, but I just like how Aiden looks better.

Alastair / Alistair

Austin / Austen - If I ever used this name it would be in reference to Jane Austen, and it would definitely be a mn. I feel like that's the only reason to spell it that way. Otherwise, just use Austin. It's pronounced the same, and people will never spell it right if it's Austen.

Braden / Bradyn - I hate the Y. It's weird and it makes the name look made up. Braden is much better.

Bryan / Brian

Bryce / Brice - I've known guys who spell it both ways, but Brice just looks cleaner.

Callen / Callan - I've never seen/heard this name, but at first glance, I like Callen better.

Cameron / Camaron / Cameran

Colin / Collin

Connor / Conner

Dakota / Dacota

Derrick / Derek

Devin / Devan / Devon

Dominic / Dominick

Elijah / Elija - it looks really weird without the H.

Finley / Finlay

Garrett / Garret - It looks a little off-balance without the extra T.

Jaden / Jayden - Maybe I'm just used to seeing it spelled this way. Jaden is more my usual style, so I'm not sure why it looks weird to me.

Jameson / Jamison - Because "son of James," James' son, Jameson.

Jared / Jarred

Jason / Jayson

Jeffrey / Jeffery

Jeremiah / Jeremia

Jonathan / Johnathan

Justin / Justen / Juston

Kieran / Ciaran - Usually I like the original Gaelic spellings, but for some reason Kieran just seems handsomer to me.

Killian / Kellan - Is this even pronounced the same? I thought Killian was KILL-EE-AN and Kellan was KELL-AN.

Lane / Layne

Mason / Mayson

Matthew / Mathew

Micah / Mikah

Michael / Micheal

Nathaniel / Nathanael

Nicholas / Nicolas

Philip / Phillip

Pierce / Piers - I would pronounce these slightly differently. Pierce would be just like the word, with a soft S sound. Piers would be more like "peers." I don't know if that's technically correct, but that's just how I say it.

Reid / Reed

Rhys / Reese / Reece

Rodney / Rodni / Rodnie

Ryan / Rian

Shamus / Seamus

Shane / Shayne

Shawn / Sean - Sean is nice. Shawn is a douche.

Skyler / Skylar / Schuyler - I like this so much better in its original form, but I'm not sure how recognizable it is?

Tristan / Tristen / Tristin / Triston

Zachariah / Zacharia

Zachary / Zachery / Zackary / Zackery / Zakary - I like Zachary best, but the nn form I like is Zack. I don't know where that came from.

Zander / Xander - just because it's a short form of Alexander, which contains "xander" and not "zander."

Zane / Zayne / Zhane

!=my favorite
Aidan / Aiden!-Just looks best this way.
Alastair / Alistair!-Alastair looks weird.
Austin! / Austen-Austen looks weird and will ALWAYS get mispronounced.
Braden! / Bradyn-Fits a boy better without the Y.
Bryan! / Brian-Bryan is so much cooler. Brian reminds me of a really nerdy guy.
Bryce! / Brice-Don't really like the way Brice looks, but it's usable spelled that way.
Callen! / Callan-Just looks better and has the right feel somehow.
Cameron! / Camaron / Cameran-Only spell it Cameron. The others look really wrong, like you mispronounced his name.
Colin / Collin!-Looks weird with only one L.
Connor! / Conner-Really though, it's fine either way.
Dakota! / Dacota-Dacota looks seriously messed up.
Derrick / Derek-No preference really. Either way is equally fine.
Devin! / Devan / Devon!-Devan looks mega weird.
Dominic! / Dominick-The K is overkill and will just bring grief.
Elijah! / Elija-Elija will bring on many double takes when people see his name and will bring on horrible grief.
Finley! / Finlay-Finlay looks too strange.
Garrett / Garret-No preference.
Jaden! / Jayden-Personally hate the extra Y.
Jameson / Jamison-I personally would pronounce Jameson (JAMES-SON) and Jamison (JAME-i (lower case i sound)-SON).
Jared! / Jarred-Extra R looks funny and is overkill.
Jason / Jayson-Either is fine.
Jeffrey! / Jeffery-Seems to work better.
Jeremiah / Jeremia-a Weird looking without the H. Will be misspelled often.
Jonathan! / Johnathan-Looks nicer, but both are fine.
Justin! / Justen / Juston-The only one that really looks like it works.
Kieran! / Ciaran-C doesn't look right.
Killian / Kellan! I would say these would be pronounced differently. I would pronounce them (KILL-i (like the lower case i sound)- ANNE) and KELL-ENN).
Lane / Layne No preference.
Mason! / Mayson-Mason, but Mayson does have a certain charm that I have to admire.
Matthew! / Mathew-Matthew is more common, but either is fine.
Micah! / Mikah-Looks nicer, but both are fine.
Michael! / Micheal-Micheal just looks really strange to me.
Nathaniel! / Nathanael-Nathanael looks weird. There are no other ways to describe that spelling.
Nicholas / Nicolas-No preference.
Philip / Phillip-No preference.
Pierce! / Piers- I would pronounce Piers PEER-S (s sound), not with the strong ce sound I think you're looking for.
Reid / Reed!- Reid is ok, but looks a little girly to me.
Rhys! / Reese / Reece (Don't know if it's just me, but I've always pronounced Rhys different than Reese/Reece.)
Rodney! / Rodni / Rodnie-The others look girly, especially Rodni which is really pretty and a name I really would use on a girl.
Ryan! / Rian-Rian looks really bad and just plain wrong to me. Love Ryan a lot though.
Shamus! / Seamus- I always pronounce it wrong when it's spelled Seamus.
Shane! / Shayne-But either is fine.
Shawn! / Sean-By far!
Skyler! / Skylar! / Schuyler-Would only use on a girl, though. Ps, Schuyler is a beast! (And...I kinda like it!)
Tristan / Tristen! / Tristin! / Triston-Tristan and Tristan just look misspelled.
Zachariah! / Zacharia-Looks too weird without the H at the end.
Zachary / Zachery / Zackary! / Zackery / Zakary-Have always LOVED this spelling!
Zander! / Xander-Hate names starting with X. Sorry. :(
Zane! / Zayne!/ Zhane-Zane and Zayne are nice. I'm warming up to Zhane. It's pretty cool. :)
Good luck with all these names!

Aidan / Aiden

Alastair / Alistair

Austin / Austen - but I don't mind it either way.

Braden / Bradyn

Bryan / Brian

Bryce / Brice

Callen / Callan

Cameron / Camaron / Cameran - I don't know why, but seeing C-A-M-E-R-O-N spelt any other way looks about weird to me.

Colin / Collin

Connor / Conner

Dakota / Dacota - I've never actually seen Dakota spelt D-A-C-O-T-A, but it looks interesting.

Derrick / Derek

Devin / Devan / Devon

Dominic / Dominick

Elijah / Elija

Finley / Finlay

Garrett / Garret

Jaden / Jayden

Jameson / Jamison - I like 'Jameson' so that he can have the nn James if he wants to.

Jared / Jarred

Jason / Jayson

Jeffrey / Jeffery

Jeremiah / Jeremia - I usually don't like it when the 'h' at the end of a name is dropped, sorry  :(

Jonathan / Johnathan

Justin / Justen / Juston - Again, any spelling variation of J-U-S-T-I-N looks a bit weird to me (other than Justen)

Kieran / Ciaran

Killian / Kellan

Lane / Layne

Mason / Mayson -  I don't think there needs to be an extra 'y' here.

Matthew / Mathew

Micah / Mikah

Michael / Micheal

Nathaniel / Nathanael

Nicholas / Nicolas

Philip / Phillip

Pierce / Piers

Reid / Reed - Whenever I see this name spelt R-E-E-D I automatically think of a plant  :P

Rhys / Reese / Reece - I LOVE the spelling R-H-Y-S. It's one of my favourite names for a boy.

Rodney / Rodni / Rodnie

Ryan / Rian - To me, R-I-A-N gives the name a whole new pronunciation,

Shamus / Seamus

Shane / Shayne

Shawn / Sean - I think that S-E-A-N looks nicer than S-H-A-W-N or S-H-A-U-N, but for the longest time I would pronounce it as "Seen"  :D

Skyler / Skylar / Schuyler - I've also never seen this name spelt S-C-H-U-Y-L-E-R, but I think it looks cook.

Tristan / Tristen / Tristin / Triston

Zachariah / Zacharia

Zachary / Zachery / Zackary / Zackery / Zakary

Zander / Xander - I prefer this name spelt X-A-N-D-E-R, because it was initially a nickname for 'Alexander'.

Zane / Zayne / Zhane

Thanks guys.
I'm getting input on my lists from the boyfriend this evening. Not sure what kind of input he's got so anything pertaining to spellings I'll post here or on the girls post. Hopefully it's lots because I'd love to narrow down my lists a bit.
