I'm watching The Last Unicorn with the kids and I started thinking about the name Amalthea. I think it's a pretty name and a good nickname would be Thea. What do you guys think?

Honestly? I don't like it. It would be hard for a young child to pronounce, and the child would always have to be explaining to others about pronunciation. It also sounds very made up.

Maybe Amelia/e Theodora / Amelia/e Theo?
Amelie is a pretty name, and I think it looks and sounds nice with Theodora.

I like the idea's Riley-Kate came up with! Amelie Theodora is a super cute combo!!!

But, Amalthea is a little odd. A bit too odd for my taste, but I have to agree it'd be hard for small children to say. Just as Aurora ;D

Thea is a cute nick name though! :(

The name actually comes from a Greek goddess. She was one of the foster-moms of Zeus. It is also the third moon of Jupiter, so the names not made up.

I just like the idea of the nickname Thea, which means goddess. I'm not a fan of Amelie or Theodora.

But thank you for the input!

Sorry I dont like the name either; what a nightmare it would be to teach your child how to spell her name. I agree that Thea is very cute. How about Amelia, Amylia, Theresa or Therese?

Well, I'm going to be different. I love it. I think it's a gorgeous name and yes, older than many names and not made up at all. I love Thea and that's a name on my list for my third child. Even more than Amalthea I love Calathea. Then again, I love both Calla and Thea. I don't think it would be any harder to spell or say than Evelynn, Emaleigh, Lilianna or some of those....

I kind of like it,,, but then I don't. I think Thea is so cute for a nickname and I love longer "A" names with cute nickname possibilities like Aurora and Anastasia, but this one is just a little too harsh for me. At least they way I am pronouncing it. How do you pronounce it? I only ask because I want to be sure I am pronouncing it the same way you are so I don't give you advice or my opinion without being on the same page! :(

I like Alethea/Althea which is very similar and I think a bit cleaner and prettier than Amalthea and it still has the nn Thea.
