While trying to understand what my naming style really is --swimming in the waters of mildly elegant, meaningful & spunky-- I have been thinking about the concept of a "Plain Names".
The term itself makes me cringe a little bit. Plain seems to have such a negative connotation; what makes a name really plain, but mostly, have we the right to shoot a name down like that?
I prefer simple.

And still, sometimes, I catch myself toying with the idea of an extremely simple first name-- it often happens when I see it written down somewhere, and I wonder about its elegance.

I guess my question is one, but I would like your opinion on the matter.

Mary.
As simple as it gets: what do you think of it as a first name?

I've seen a Mary Anderson on flickr today, and maybe it was the fairytale-ish atmposphere of her pictures, but I marveled at the name.

I don't know about you guys; what do you think?

[oh, maybe I've gone completely crazy]

I think Mary is a pretty name that has been killed because of its overuse...Mary, Marie, Maria, Mariah, Maryann, MaryJane...

My grandmother's name is Mary Nell but she has always gone by Nell. My dad's girlfriend's name is Mary. My best friend's mom's name is Nell Marie. Another one of my best friends is Kristina Marie. My uncle is married to a Mary.

But its overused because it is a classic. Because it is a beautiful name. And to tell you the truth...for this next generation Mary will probably be refreshing and underused. Instead it will be the McKenzie's and McKayla's who will make us want to pull our hair out.

I can't really call it dated, because it is such a timeless, classic name, but it has the same sort of feel as a dated name to me...

Most of the time, I find it to be very blah. I do know this one girl who can really pull it off though, and because she has such a unique personality, it really makes me think of the name on a whole different level. She makes such a classic, simple name seem spunky and fresh.

I do prefer other variations of it, like Maria or Mariah. I also adore the name Miriam/Mariam.

But Mary is not a bad name, and since it's been used so much over the years, it doesn't really have a certain connotation with it and I think it's a name that almost any girl in any generation could have and its not going to seem weird.
