Okay, so I was stalking Nameberry and I stumbled upon this name.

Namberry tells me it's a French version of January and is commonly used for boys, but I found it on there as a girl's name.

It's pronounced zhan-vee-air

What do you all think? I'm really liking it.

Girl or boy?

What would some middle name suggestions be?

As a French speaker I don't really like the name, but to each their own. I feel like it lacks the elegance that most French names have. Also, I feel like the child would always get called Javier.

I think it would fit better on a boy.

I've also taken French for a couple years before switching to ASL, so I'm not a fan either. I think the -ier ending makes it feel masculine. And to me, it's quite literally like naming your child January, which is actually more feminine to me and I like it better.

I'd go with fairly simple, well-known names to balance it out.

Janvier Hope

Janvier Willow

Janvier Quinn (too unisex?)

Janvier Lily

Janvier Lucy

Janvier Grace

Janvier Camille

Janvier Anne

Janvier Nell

Janvier Maya

I think it would be a nice middle, but it's a bit too much for a first. Maya Janvier or Lucy Janvier would be super pretty.

I also see this name as masculine because of its similarity to Javier. And Jan (Zhan) is also very masculine.  As a masculine french name, I don't mind it all that much although if you didn't have any French roots or any reason to use such a distinctly french name, I would find it a bit odd. But if it is a name that you absolutely love, then go for it, boy or girl. I think it is unusual enough that you could pass it along for either gender.

It does remind me a bit of JonBenet (Zhan- Ben-eh) Ramsey which was infamously the name of a little girl who was mysteriously kidnapped/killed in her parents home here in US back in the mid-90s.
