I'm reading East of Eden by John Steinbeck for my AP English class next year. (I'm loving it and hating it at the same time) Anyway, I've picked out a few names on the unique side while reading and I wanted to know what you all thought:

Cyrus
Julius
Aron

Liza
Deila
Una
Olive
Faye
Abra

I like Julius, Olive, and I love, love, love Abra. Her name comes from a poem by Matthew Prior:

Abra was ready ere I called her name;
And though I called another, Abra came.

I didn't like how it looked at first, but after reading a through a few chapters with her name, its really been growing on me. I think I might like it better if it were spelt Aubra.

So what do you think?

It is a Pokemon name. I just googled it. Well, that makes me think twice about considering the name....

HAHAHAHA. That's what I thought of as soon as I saw the name Abra.

Other than the Pokemon I automatically asumed it was a boy's name. Don't know why. :)

Cyrus - hate. reminds me of Miley Cyrus, etc. Like Sirus spelling better.
Julius - okay
Aron - is this like Aaron? Prefer Aaron.

Liza - don't really like
Deila - love
Una - don't like
Olive - like
Faye - like and I don't know why... lol
Abra - okay. reminds me of the pokemon as well. And it looks like a boys name for some reason

Yes, Aron is an alternate spelling of Aaron.

Aron is a twin to Caleb (Cal) in the book. Their father's name is Adam---when he named the twins, he considered Cain and Abel---but then thought better of it. It then went to Caleb and Joshua, who were the only two men to make it out of Egypt and live to see the promised land. But then he decided on Aaron and Caleb--still both connected to the Moses story and Aaron got changed to Aron.

The novel, East of Eden follows the Adam/Eve/Cain/Abel story, so the author probably did the AC thing on purpose (Adam's brother's name was Charles---and charles was the jealous one like Cain and he tried to kill Adam once) and the twins, Aron and Cal, are very much like the biblical Abel and Cain. Aron is kind and loving and very innocent and naive, while Cal is conniving and jealous. Its a neat book.

I think if I ever used Abra, I would definitely spell it Aubra.

Cyrus
Julius
Aron

I love all the boys names. Though I'd probably use Cyrus and Julius only as middle names.

Liza
Deila
Una
Olive
Faye
Abra

Olive is my favorite.
I like Eliza better then Liza (which could be a nickname IMO), and I prefer Delia to Deila. I'm not a fan of Una and Faye.
As for Abra.. I agree that it's better spelled Aubra. But I prefer Audra/Audrey <_<

Abra made me think of two thing:

1. Abra cadabra.
2. Pokemon! (gotta cath'em all!

*mind you, I'm weird*

Regarding the other names:

Cyrus -I have always LOVED this name. It has a level of inteligence.
Julius - Never like it, altough i like medieval names.. this one is too close to Julio, a very popular spanish name.
Aron -Prefer it with the double a.

Liza -Like it with the "z", don't like it with the "s"
Deila - Not my stile.
Una -This is actually "one" in Spanish, so not a fan.
Olive -Like it, but never use it.
Faye -ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT.
