My husband wants to name our son "Nico". I would like to name him Nicolas and call him Nico for short, however, Nicholas is such a common name. Are there any other names that could be shortened to "Nico" as a nickname?

Nicolai and Nicodemus are the only other ones I can think of right now..

I agree with Jennifer, Dominic would be a good choice. I love the name Nico, I think its nice as it is.

I really love the name Nicolas and don't think you should be afraid of the possible popularity factor. According to the SS site, Nicolas (this spelling) was the #140 name in 2006; Nicholas (with this spelling) was the #17 name. I think you're more likely to come across an Aidan, Hayden, Jacob, Joshua, or Ethan before another Nicolas in his classes.

However, if your're still insistant that Nicolas is just too popular for you, I do think that you should use Nicolai. It's a nice Eastern European variant of Nicolas. I also think its a name that will be easier for little kids to pronounce, where as Nicodemus is not. Dominic, nick name Nico, is OK but I'm not thrilled with it. All the Dominics I know go by Dom.

I really like Nicolas. If you mostly call him Nico, I don't think it matters so much that it's popular.

I also like Dominic with Nico as a nickname. I know a couple of Dominics who are called Nick, and it's never seemed to be an issue.

Other names that Nico could be short for (and I do think Nico is pretty nicknamey):

Niccolo/Nicolo
Nicodemo
Nicodemus
Yannick

I really like Nicolas and Dominic nn Nico, and Liz nailed it wit Yannick - it's one of my obscure favourites, for some reason.

I know a guy whose name is Nico, not short for anything.
