I came up with this idea for a story that takes place in/around early 1800s England.

I've decided that the main male character should have the last name Vaughn which he is mostly called. But I need a first name. I'm thinking the middle name will be Alexander. I'd like something that flows well with Vaughn and is probably 3-4 syllables long, nothing too common and something that would be found in England in the 1700-1800s. I was thinking Sebastian but I kinda want something a bit more interesting/different that is very masculine but not too weird. (yeah I'm picky  ).

For a discription. He is the son of a professor of history who I've tentatively named Johnathan Alexander Vaughn (so names of historical importance would be cool) and his mother was an heiress from a well to do family so he was educated at the best schools. After leaving school he joined the military and rose to the rank of Captain before being discharged. Fought in the Battle of Waterloo. He has a reputation as someone who is very skilled at completing difficult and almost impossible tasks. He lives on the edge of society and is usually hired for top dollar in no-questions-asked sort of deals.

In my story, Vaughn is hired by Lord ________ to track down his niece who ran away to avoid being forced into marriage. There is also a slew of Vaughn's men who aid him on his jobs. I don't really have definite names for any of the other characters yet but this is the main one that is giving me trouble at the moment.

So basically what I need right now is a first name for ___________ Alexander Vaughn.

Thanks in Advance!

Sorry, I meant to come back to this topic and comment again but never did. I don't think you should use Ramsden because I thought you were using it in your other story and if you use it here too, that might be a little confusing. I don't really like Noble. I don't think it flows very well with Vaughn. Rowland is better, but it still doesn't pop. I'm still caught up on Lawrence Alexander Vaughn. Lawrence by itself might not seem to grand, but the full name sounds very like your character IMO.

Lawrence Alexander Vaughn

(You could even play around with the nickname Laurie like in Little Women, but in that case I would spell it Laurence.)

My character in my other story was Ramuel, not Ramsden but still close. I had thought about them being similar...apparently I like Ram- names :D

Lawrence Alexander Vaughn is on my short list but I still like Noble & Rowland as well. I like Percival too but Percy reminds me of HP and of someone who is a winer rather than a military sort of guy. Edwin is a good one too.

So far this is my short list...

Lawrence Alexander Vaughn
Rowland Alexander Vaughn
Edwin Alexander Vaughn
