I've seen in a lot of name games and such, that it's rather common for women to drop their middle name upon marriage, and use their original surname as their middle name?

example:

Margaret Jane Ellis gets married to Edward John Green and becomes Margaret Ellis Green.

Is this a common thing in America? Does it happen at all? I don't think I've ever seen this sort of thing happen in the UK, and I'm curious to whether its a cultural thing, or just a, 'BNG' type occurrence.

It happens some, but it's a lot more common for a woman to keep both her middle name and maiden name in the middle spot, so Margaret Jane Ellis would become Margaret Jane Ellis Green. I've never personally met someone who's kicked out their middle name entirely.

^Same. I've seen it occasionally, mostly whenever people monogram things. I guess it becomes too clunky otherwise.

But I think, for the most part, that women tend to keep their middle and maiden name and just tack their married name onto both, like Addison said.

I certainly don't plan on dropping my middle name!

I'm from Atlanta, Georgia and my mother was Lynne Julia Hudson. Now her name is Lynne Hudson (surname).

It is a very traditional, usually Southern US or upper class will keep thier maiden name as the middle. And sometimes if the family name carries a lot of weight (like the Kennedy family) you will see the women of the family always keep it in the middle spot.

My aunt lives in the south and since she didn't get married till she was nearly fourty, she has always been connected to her maiden name. That's part of the reason why she kept it, I guess?

My aunt dropped her middle name and used her surname there. I actually have never met or heard of anyone else doing that though. So it happens, but I wouldn't consider it common.
