I've been thinking a lot about my grandmothers first name, Mary. I previously came up with the name Marylark for a girl which combines both of my grandparents first names, but since I plan to use Lark as the middle name for a future boy, I'm not sure if I'll use Marylark. Do you think it would be weird for me to use both Lark and Marylark in the middle name spots?

 

If so, I've been thinking I'd still like to use Mary. However, Mary is also the name of my dads girlfriend and there is some bad blood there. If I used it, it would be to honor my grandma, but I don't like the idea of it being associated with my dads girlfriend as well. So I'm still on the fence.

 

What do you think of the name Mary in general? Is it too old fashioned or ripe for a come back?

I think Mary is a beautiful name, definitely not too old-fashioned. If used in the first name spot, Mamie is an adorable nickname. I also knew a Mary who went by Minnie, which I thought was pretty. Mitzi, May, and Molly are others I've heard of.

As a middle name, it's so much prettier than the tired, overused Marie.

If you really like it, use it. You could also use your grandmother's middle name or maiden name to honor her if you don't want to use Mary.

I know two Marys that are in the 15-17 age range... quite young. I think it could definitely work! I also like nessielove's idea of using your grandma's mn or maiden name... Just up to you!

Marylark is very creative, and I think you could still use it even if you use Lark too. At one point, two of my future daughters would have had VERY similar mns too (Mae for one and Maisie for another)

My grandma has actually always gone by her middle name, Nell, but I don't like it very much. And her maiden name isn't really usable. I would love to use Molly as a way to honor my grandma but Ben hates it.

Or even just Mary. If you like Eleanore, then the nn honors your grandma and so does the mn...

Hmm... Lark and Marylark are awfully similar, but then again, it shouldn't be too much of a problem if they go by their first names.  After all, I know a family in which all three sons have the same middle name, which is also the father's first name haha!  So I don't think it's a problem.

 

I understand your concern about using just Mary. Perhaps you could combine it with another name, as in Mary-Claire, Mary-Jane, Mary-Kate, etc?  If not, I would recommend looking at this list I stumbled upon from Nameberry... it contains different variations of Mary.  Maybe you and Ben could find a name there you both like?

Mary is a sweet, lilting name that sounds BEAUTIFUL on any age and has an incredible depth of significant heritage!! It was used SO much that everyone got put off it for a while, but this happens to many names, and I think it is gently creeping back in now! I personally know 5 or 6 Marys and their ages range from octogenarian down to mid-twenties! All are lovely, sweet, intelligent women but with vastly different personality types and interests! I have gently toyed with the idea of using Mary for a long time now because the story of Mary and Martha in the Bible is VERY precious to me! My Sister is the most Martha-ish Darling of a person I know, and I happen to be quite Mary-ish! Anyway, Lark (more particularly Skylark) is a name I ADORE for Girls only so I find the idea of MaryLark VERY beautiful!! . Hope my tired, sleep deprived ramblings help!

I love Mary, esp in the middle spot. I had Estella Mary on my list for a looong time. I also have a sweet spot for Mary ___ names, when they go by both names. I know a Mary Catherine, a Mary Cecilia, a Mary Annabella, and a Mary Clementine. None of them have any trouble with getting people to call them by both names. (Although Mary Clementine is a newborn and might have trouble in the future)
