Writing a book based on a game that my older brother and I play with our little brother. Anyway, I can't figure out other ways for some of the characters to get their powers without sounding repetitive?

So far I have:

  1. Lab explosion
  2. Lab experiment
  3. Born with them
  4. Meteorite
  5. Mutation
  6. Curse
  7. Interaction with strange plant

What are some other ways that can cause powers?

Eating a bad food or drink??? [I guess that's more zombie-breakout, but it could work]

The plant one sounds really cool!

Bad reaction to vaccination or medication, ie a flue shot

Gets sick (like with a virus or tumor etc) and takes a risky cure or own immune system fights the disease and instead of dying, they end up with powers

The government, Fountain of Youth?, supernatural encounters, electrical malfunction?, discovering some ancient powers (in a tomb or something uncovered), bug/animal bite, something biblical?, something like a medical transplant of a body part that has powers?

Hi,

I like a lot of these ideas, some of them are pretty creative! However, I feel like "Being born with them" is a cliche, as a lot of writers have used that and a trigger that activates their powers. A mutation would be a little weird, but writing is about imagination so that would be cool!

"Interaction with a strange plant" would be interesting. Would the characters visit a person's arboretum? Out of all of these, this one is probably my favorite.

I have a suggestion, though I'm not sure if it's as great as these! A significant family member of your main character could be dying, and while lying in the hospital bed, clasped the main character's hand. From that sudden motion a secret hidden power in which the family member had been hiding for many years is passed on, to the main character. (Little confusing!) I hope you like this idea, but your plant one sounds really peculiar.

How about "brushing teeth with fluoride toothpaste"?! 😁 Ok, I'm joking. But only kinda.

Being bit by a radioactive spider (or other bug/creature)
Being abducted by aliens/finding out he or she actually is an alien
Near death experience causes them to have organ transplants
Going to sleep in a 'Haunted' house and waking up with powers

I'm not sure how far into the sci-fi realm you go, so these suggestions could be way out there.

This one was a really great suggestion! And not one I've heard or read before!

I think that's a good idea. :) It reminds me of the Spirit Bear in "Touching Spirit Bear" by Ben Mikaelsen.
