I like Iris Johansen, Karen Marie Moning, Stephen King, James Patterson, Jane Austen, Charlotte Brontë, Diana Gabaldon, Kathy Reichs, and Robert Burns (every Scot's favorite author). I really love music and even got accepted to the Mason Gross School of Performing Arts at Rutgers University (my alma mater) for vocal performance. Unfortunately performance life was not for me, so I went into English Lit and French instead. Music is still a big part of my life, and I like a multitude of musical genres from Reggae to Rock to Opera. I've seen Carmen and La bohčme each twice. (And I cry every time.) My husband and I also have a special place in our hearts for The Beatles.

What's your opinion on 2 or more middle names on a kid? I've been seeing this a lot on the Genie Name Polls, and I really don't get it.

On every piece of legal documentation I've ever seen, examples: Driver's License/Passport/Social Security Card, only have the option for 1 middle name. So what's the point?

I think it can be nice sometimes. If parents are having trouble deciding on names and they sound good together, I don't see why they shouldn't use both. I would assume the two middles would count as one name on most documents. It takes a really special name to make it sound good though. Most of the names I've been seeing on the poll site aren't that good.

If they're stuck between 2 names I think that 1 should be the first and 1 the middle. Any other names, in my opinion, should be earmarked for future children.

But what if they're never in the position to have another child and they wanted their first child to be a namesake of their poor deceased grandmother or something? I think if they have two family names they'd like to use, but don't think either are suitable as a first name for whatever reason, that it could be an okay time to use two middle names. Ex: Lily (most popular name in the universe right now, or so it seems) Ira Rose Smith. Say their grandmothers' names were Ira and Rose, but they didn't want to use either as a first name. I think Lily Ira Rose Smith is an okay name. But something like Lillian Irene Rosanna Smith is too much name.

It depends on what it is. I think it's just really unnecessary to be honest. I don't see a whole lot of point to it. But whatever.

I have to agree 100%. And honestly unless your from some dynastic or royal family, I think it's rather tacky. A poor attempt of Nouveau riche to seem more affluent or prestigious then they are. But that might just be me. (And if I've offended anyone, sorry. It wasn't intentional)

Well, I never thought it was odd to have two middle names, mainly because my uncle (by marriage) and his whole family have a tradition of having two middle names, and so all four of his kids have two middle names...I'll tell you, though, they had quite a time trying to come up with three names! lol! But yeah, if it's a family tradition or if it's honoring family members, I guess it's okay. Otherwise, I don't see why you'd do it...

In general I am not very keen on two middle names because it seems a bit pretentious, but I think LeAnne's got a point there, if the parents can't or won't have more children and want to honour family members, it's fine, as long as the flow isn't absolutely off. Of if you're absolutely stuck on a name combo, but the initials aren't so nice, like Daisy Olivia Grant (DOG). Daisy Olivia Jane Grant could be a way to fix it without switching names or finding another combo you like as much as the previous one.

Of course, sometimes it's a matter of family tradition, and I think it's fine too. But giving a child two middle names just because you can isn't my cup of tea at all.

I think having two middle names is a nice way of using names that you love or that honour family members. Maybe you love ten names but don't want to have five children; you want to honour your grandmothers but don't really love their names, or think that one of your grandmothers would be offended if you didn't use her name.
I agree that it can seem pretentious, but it all depends on the names you choose.
Honestly, I prefer a kid with a "pretentious" 3-name-combo to one with a kr8ive or contrived name. I believe that if you can't decide on one middle name it's better to give your kid two than to invent a one that's a combination of all the names.

That is a good point to consider. I mean as long as the parents understand that only one middle intial will be used, if the child chooses to use it at all, on the Driver's License or Passport.

I've never gotten it either. It seems pointless to me. I have a couple of people in my family with 2 middle names, the middle names being after grandfathers, etc.

OMG, I don't think it is pointless at all (or ridiculous). I think if a mother and a father come up with a name that sounds great, but just happens to have 2 middle names, I see nothing wrong with it. It would kind of be like saying there is no point in two first names, which is pretty common. I think that it just depends on the person. If someone wants to use two middle names, then be my guest. If you don't, then that's just it... DON'T. I know someone named Meaghan Marie Michelle. Personally, I think that is too many M's, but the name sounds okay. I also think that two middle names, or two first names, is a way of using as many of the names that you love.

We are currently expecting number four, and are so excited! I am of course a mother first, but I am a writer second. I am a nut about names and etymology in general. I love reading; I’m a sucker for both the more modern fantasy books, like Harry Potter, and the also classics, like Shakespeare. Music is another thing that I could’ve live without, and I have to say my tastes definitely lean towards modern rock: Nickelback, Hinder, Papa Roach, and Theory of a Deadman are my very favorites. Not too big on television, but I couldn’t live without Lost. I also love cars (and driving them!), and I am the proud “mommy” of a Ford Mustang. I’m also pretty big on talking and I like to see myself as friendly, so I hope to see you around the boards!

I think it all just depends on the context, really. It's pointless when using two middle names to make a name look more regal, or something, but when it's of greater meaning to the parents (heck, or even if they just like the way it sounds) I see absolutely nothing wrong with it. My full name was almost Emily Charity Helena, with Emily being my grandma's name and Helena my great-grandma's, but mom decided to drop the "Helena" at the last second.

Helena is my oldest's first name  If you don't mind my asking, how does your family pronounce it? Helen-a, he-lay-na or some other way?

It's a gorgeous name :D I love both pronunciations, but my family tends to use "He-lay-na". Should we ever have another little girl after Victoire, I'm really considering using it.

We use Helen-a, though every now and then I call her He-lay-na and she just looks at me funny, as if saying 'You're barking mad'. Needless to say, I recommend it and think you should very seriously consider it

i think it just depends on what you like. if you feel the need to give your child more than one middle name (or first for that matter) then do it, if not, then don't. Personally, i'm more into 2 first names than 2 middles, but i have thought about potentially doing the two middle names for a boy if i ever have one. My husband wants to use his middle name and i also want to honor my father. :)

Obviously I 2 middle names as I have two and so does my daughter. It is tradition and I was going to use my mom's name to honor her but I changed it but she still has a name honoring someone. I don't think there is anything wrong with having two middle names, in fact I know someone that has 5 middle names. It all depends on the parents. When people say it's stupid and stuff it really does hurt my feelings :/
