So I've been liking the name River for a girl lately. I have been trying to think of some middle names that go with it and it has been quite difficult. I want something that sounds great with River, has a feminine sound but doesn't clash with River's style.

I came up with two combo's I kind of like.

River Elizabeth

&

River Ophelia

Elizabeth would honor my sister Sally (Sara Elizabeth) and it is also a family name that goes back many generations. However, Elizabeth isn't exactly an original name since it is a very common family name. I think it sounds nice with River but it is a bit filler. :\

Ophelia sounds lovely with River, it is ultra feminine but doesn't clash with River's style. It seems almost perfect, however, does it seem a bit morbid to you? Since the famous Ophelia from Shakespeare's Hamlet drowned?

Anyway, I'd love to hear your thoughts on these two combos, plus any other suggestions for middle names you may have.

Thanks.

River is nice for a little girl, and I do agree that Elizabeth is somewhat of a filler. But, I do like the way River Ophelia sounds. It flows really well, but I can see how the idea of Ophelia in Hamlet drowning would ruin the idea of naming a little girl this.

Some suggestions you might like?

River Grace
River Natalia
River Fiona
River Corinne
River Katheryn
River Alexa
River Eloise
River Elena
River Elaina
River Layne
River Gabrielle/a
River Lucille
River Sophie/a
River Olivia
River Katarina
River Claire
River Clara
River Madeline
River Gianna
River Ella

Hope I could be of some assistance! (:

I just love your names! >w<

Ok, River Elizabeth or River Ophelia...

I love Elizabeth because it honors your sister, and for me honoring names take priority. So that's my vote.

BUT I love the name Ophelia, and I don't think it's morbid (even though I am very familiar with Shakespeare). It's still a lovely name.

What about a variation of Elizabeth, that's more unique and would honor your sister?

Some nicknames/variations:
*A good middle for River

*Alizabeth
Bess
*Beth
Buffy
Elisabith
Elisheva
Ellspet
*Elsee
Elyse
Leesa
Libby
Lilabet
*Lillibeth
Lisanne
Lizbeth
Lysa
*Lyse
Lyzette

River Alizabeth
River Beth
River Elsee
River Lillibeth
River Lyse

Just a thought. :)

Thanks for the suggestions. A lot of the names you suggested are actually names already used in my family...Claire (sister mn, cousin fn, aunt mn), Clara (cousin's baby fn), Madeline (sister's fn), Grace (neice), Lucille (neice named Luci) & Katherine is my name and is a family name.

I kinda like River Katheryn & River Claire.

I was actually considering a sort of variant of Elizabeth...Elysande or Elisende.

I like your suggestions of Elspeth, Lilabet, Lilibeth or maybe Lilibet, Lilabeth. Eliza used to be on my list of first names for girls...

River Lilabeth is probably my favorite from your suggestions.

I love River! :) I think it's just adorable on a little girl.

Though I do like River Elizabeth, there's something about River Ophelia that's enchanting.
I actually like the Hamlet connection [not in a creepy, wrong way of course]. But there's something "Magical" about the combo.

As for a different middle name, River Lilabeth is GORGEOUS!

Hmm, I always found River to be all boy.. but seeing it with River.... :)

I suppose it sounds a tad morbid, seeing as she did drown. [I am pretty familiar with the story of Ophelia.. reading Hamlet and all. I also read another book about Ophelia and whatnot and found it so interesting!]. However, I totally agree with Yas. Its magical and enchanting, not in the creepy way hehe.

River Elizabeth is nice as well.. but I definitely love River Ophelia!!
