Okay, so my teacher has three daughters.
Roisin Marie is 14. I met her today.
Sinead Ann is 10.
Saoirse Lynn is 6.
The funny thing, is how their names are pronounced.
Roisin, typically pronounced Ro-sheen is pronounced Roy-sin
Sinead, typically shuh nayd is Sin-ee-ad
Saoirse, usually Seer shuh, is Say-or-seh

Roisin dislikes her given name pronounciation, so she goes by Ro-sheen.

I wonder why they would ruin such good names.

What are your thoughts?

Oooh. I do prefer the original spellings. :/

There's some names that I also like prn as they're spelt:

Niamh -prefer Neev, but used to like Nee-am.
Saorise -Sa-oh-reez

etc.

Ugh. that annoys me. I love the traditional prn. Its just weird to try to phonetically say them...

I wonder if your teacher is not 100% American?
I ask because, this "alternative" pronunciation might sound totally weird to you, but it's how I would pronounce them, if I didn't know any better.
Did it make sense?
I mean, I know now that Saoirse is pronounced Seer-shuh, but in Italian, you read the words as they are written, unlike English.
So that's how any Italian would prn. them without knowing

Hope I made some sense there!

Ooh, Nadia, that's a good point! She actually is Italian (probably full blooded) and she does have a slight accent, so that's probably why.
seer shu
shu nade
and
ro sheen

are prettier though. :P

I do have to agree.

Though I never did quite like Seer-shuh. In my accent, It sounds like I'm saying Sasha with a cockney/australian accent. :P

I prefer the original pronounciations! Before I knew how to properly say classic Irish names I probably would have tried to say them the way your teacher says them.

That's why I don't like names like that. All the pronounciations are completely different from how they are spelled. Just spell it Seersha or something!

Exactly.

Same goes for the name Niamh or something.

I kept thinking 'nyphm, like the magical creature!'

Little did I know it's actually N-eeve.
