Yes- John vs. No- Jon vs. No Opinion

We’re naming our son Jonathan in honor of someone. We will call him Jon/John, but my question was: Can we spell Jon/John with the h even if we spell Jonathan without the first h? Sorry if that made no sense, but I would really appreciate some feedback. Thanks, Sylvia

I’d stick with Jon, personally. But I have seen people spell Jonathan as Johnathan, and then it would make more sense to add the "h" to his nn. ?

Okay thank you. We’re probably sticking with the spelling Jonathan as that’s how the man we are honoring spells it. And we don’t hate the spelling Jon. I just prefer John, though I’d say I can get used to Jon. Thanks again for your opinion

i think you can absolutely use John! I know 3 jonathans that go by john! if that is the spelling you like than use that one. Honestly, most people spell it john anyway so he wont be correcting it all the time anyway

Most I have seen go by Jon, but it probably does not matter. Many nn do not make sense -- e.g. William nn Bill.

I agree. How do they get Peggy out of Margaret or Polly out of Mary?
