Adiah (A-DEE-uh) vs. Yes vs. No

I’m head over heels for the name Adiah. I can’t shake it. It means "ornament of Jehovah" and feels like a significant declaration of our faith and the hope we have that our daughter will be a unique expression of God to our world. However, I worry about how the name will be recieved. . . I have a feeling most will not be able to pronounce it. I have an extremely common name, so I’m not familiar with the repercussions of possessing a name few recoginize and pronounce correctly. Should this even be a concern? Also, I worry about it looking like a made up name or seeming like a cultural mismatch particularly on a resume (we’re of Irish/Swedish decent). Should I toss it out and look for something new, or do you think it would be well recieved?? Thanks so much for your help! I truly value your opinion!

I like it. It has a great meaning and you love it, which is the primary reason to choose a name.

To answer your other question, I had a name that wasn’t even pronounceable in English, so I had an "English pronunciation" at school. And of course, being in a very multicultural city, each accent produced a different pronunciation. I really didn’t mind it that much. Most people got it right after I told them once and my name was way stranger than Adiah.

Keep it! Adiah is a beautiful name and meaning! My name is LaRaina and for some reason most people don’t know how to prn it! I almost always have to repeat my name and then spell it. Honestly, it doesn’t bother me at all. I am glad I’m not one of the many Sarah/Amanda/Katie/Rachels... not that those are bad names! GL!

Your daughter will be a ’unique expression of God to our world’ even if you name her Emma-I think folks may be stretching things a bit thinking a name’s "meaning" will mold a person’s personality or way of moving through their life-just my opinion I don’t mean to be rude at all.

I pronounced it right before even looking at the pronunciation.
Its not that hard

The girl’s name Adiah \a-diah\ is a variant of Ada (Old German), and the meaning of Adiah is "noble".

The baby name Adiah sounds like Adia, Addiah and Adah. Other similar baby names are Abiah, Aviah, Adrah, Adinah, Adibah, Adivah, Adriah, Asiah, Aliah and Amiah.

Adiah is an uncommon first name for women and an equally uncommon last name for both men and women. (1990 U.S. Census)

The girl’s name Ella \e(l)-

la\ is pronounced EL-ah. It is of Old German origin, and its meaning is "other, foreign". Also possibly means "entire" or (Hebrew) "goddess". Also short form of Alice, Eleanor, Ellen and Elvira.
-Looks like your name is the "made up" one.

I really appreciate all the feedback.
To those who shared their personal experience with unique names, thanks! Your prospective is quite reassuring!
As for the question posed pertaining to the importance of name meaning, I personally believe names shape the identity of people and take the responsibility of naming my children quite seriously. Biblically, God changed the names of people according to his agenda over them. That alone speaks volumes to me of the significance of a name. . . Not to say someone with a common, unspiritual name (such as mine) cannot be used by God. . .
As for Ella’s comment, I didn’t make this name up. It’s Hebrew. And actually my husband and I LOVE the name Ella as well! It’s gorgeous! And on our list of possibilities. Again, I really appreciate all the advice!

I plan to name my first daughter Chaya (said Hay-a) which is Hebrew for "life" (another form of Eve) and I completely agree with what you posted so go for it with Adiah!
Good luck!

I have a unique name and it is a pain telling and retelling people how to say it and spell it. People I see daily obviously have it right, but I do get sick of name issues I have with people I just meet or don’t see frequently.

I guess my point is she won’t be introducing herself as ’ornament of jehovah’ and I’ll bet the name Adiah means many many different things in different cultures-some definitions with good connotations some bad. Like the poster who named their child Chaya (beautiful btw) it might mean ’life’ in hebrew but it is also ’shadow’ in hindi, ’tearoom’ in japanese, a brand of tequilla, and the name of a plant known as ’tree spinach’- tasty but not so deep in meaning. Just name her a name you love and go well with your last name and other children if you have any.

Do you think Adiah goes well with Jonah? (my son’s name)

The Hebrew meaning of Adiah is "ornament of Jehovah" . . . I want to be able to articulate to my children why I chose their name (something other than "it sounded pretty," you know?) I’m in search of something that is significant but not overly strange. . . I would never want to give my child a name that would position them for rejection simply for the sake of meaning. . . Surely there are names that will fit both. I’m just attempting to determine if Adiah is one of those.

I too love the name Chaya, unique and love the meaning! :)
