Love the Name! vs. Like the Name. vs. Hate the Name!

Hey! I was wondering if you all love/like/hate the name Fiona. I am on the fence on it and I want to love it. My only concern is that the name will be associated with the movie Shrek. What are your honest opinions? Thank you!

Fiona is a beautiful Irish name - if you want a less common alternative how about Finola or Finula?

I like the name Fiona its a very nice name and i think by the time she is in school none of the kids will really know Shrek.

Fiona is a pretty name, but Shrek really just ruined it

I love the name Fiona and did not even make a connection to Shrek till you said that was your only concern.

Of course they will know shrek. Snow White was made many years ago and I know the movie very well.

Thanks everyone! I was worried that Shrek had ruined it, but you may be right that it may be "gone" by the time she goes to school. How do you say Finola and Finula? Thanks, again!

I like Fiona. And while some people will think Shrek (mainly only while she is a child, unlikely when she is an adult) I disagree that Shrek "killed" the name. Fiona is actually a pretty cool character. She’s pretty, strong, follows her heart.... even if people think of the movie there’s no shame there.
If you love it I would go with it.

I like it very much, and I did not even think about shrek until you mentioned it. names are used from everywhere so I would not even worry about it. Fiona is great!

I’ve never liked Fiona. It’s just not my taste. But if you love it, definitely don’t let trivial things stop you.

Thank you pps! You all are very encouraging with your comments. So, you think that even though Fiona is an ogre, it wouldn’t be horrible if she was associated with her? Thanks, again!

Finola (emphasize the Fin, long o sound, and then la is pronounced like lah) - I knew a girl in middle school with that name.
I also knew a few girls named Finula - it’s the same pronunciation as Finola except instead of the long O the u is pronounced like ou - like in the word pool. But I also really love Fiona, it’s a bit easier to pronounce and it is ageless - I didn’t even think about Shrek until you mentioned it.

Nah, she’s a cool ogre. Kid’s think Shrek is cool, and I don’t think any adults could care less, so you’re good to go.

If you love it, don’t question yourself for a second. Use it. Fiona is a sweet princess anyways :)

There’s gonna be some other movie out there by the time your kid is old enough to be bothered with Shrek. Sure, kids will know Shrek, but it won’t be nearly as popular as it is now.

Thanks everyone for the sweet and helpful comments! You all have really encouraged me. I am now really, seriously considering the name Fiona for my daughter. Thanks, again!

were you the poll from earlier- inlaws hating it? Well, as an adult, I freely admit to thinking of Shrek, but that I could overlook it, but kids are just not always so kind, and I would hate for your daughter to get picked on by what is such an obvious association to children.

No, I wasn’t the poster from earlier. Did she want to name her baby Fiona also? Thanks for your honest comment.
