Unisex vs. names?

Do you like unisex names on a girl? I’m expecting my second daughter soon and my husband wants to give her a unisex name as I got to name our first a girly name, Layla. He likes Flynn, Reagan, Hayden, Jorden, Nikki, Bobby, Harley and Riley. I’m not convinced. I don’t want people thinking Layla has a little brother, or that we were hoping for a boy and got disappointed. Am I over-reacting?

Personally, I don’t think you’re overreacting. I’m not a fan of unisex names in general, but especially paired with a very girly name I think it will sound like you have a boy and a girl.

If your husband is really set on this, you could give her a girly name that has a unisex nickname.

Roberta nn Bobby
Willa nn Billie
Nicole/Nicolette nn Nikki
Jessica/Jessalyn nn Jessie
Matilda nn Mattie
Charlotte nn Charlie

of the names he suggested, I actually do like Reagan because that name is more common girls than it is boys.

it depends on the name. from your list i think Reagan, Hayden, Jordan, Nikki, Bobbi/Bobbie, Harley and Ryley work on girls (notice how i changed some of the spellings)
Flynn imo is definitely a boy name. i think Layla and Nikki/Bobbi/Ryley will work well because they have feminine spellings. or how about

Layla and Ryann
Layla and Quinn
Layla and Skye
Layla and Tegan

I’m not a fan of many unisex names either, but I think Riley is okay... Maybe spelled Rylie? If you pair it with a super feminine middle name, I think Rylie would be very nice with Layla!

Rylie Nicole
Rylie Paige
Rylie Olivia
Rylie Elizabeth
Rylie Isabella
Rylie Josephine (nn Rylie Jo?)

Good luck!

I’m not a lover of unisex names, either. Though there are some that are more passable than others. Of yours Jordan and Riley/Rylie are OK. I have a good friend with a daughter Hayden and we were confused when we received a message that the baby’s name was Hayden Grace... was it a boy or girl?! Was there a spelling mistake somewhere! But now I can’t imagine her being anything else (and I think she is just as rough and tumble as a boy, too!)

I hate unisex names on girls. The names your husband likes I prefer Reagan & Bobbie. I can’t stand the name Riley on either sex !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think Riley is so tacky its not funny

I agree with the first poster-find a definitely girl name with a boy/unisex nn. Charlotte nn Charlie is cute. Nikki I do not hear on boys anymore, just nick, so I think Nicole nn Nikki would work. And though I can see Quinn on a boy or a girl, I think Layla and Quinn sounds adorable together, and definitely two sisters.

I love unisex names for girls!! The ones listed are used more on girls than boys, with the exception of Bobby, and I don’t care for that one anyway. I really like Hayden, Riley, Harley and Raegan!! GL
