Change of vs. middle name

Hi all. My full name is Monica Brogan Pritchard, and I have hated my middle name for as long as I can remember. My mom is fully Irish and my dad is fully Welsh. Since I was going to have a Welsh last name already, they gave me an Irish middle name…only they didn’t bother finding out what it meant. So, not liking it already, I looked it up and found out that it means “shoe.” Needless to say, I hated it even more once I knew the meaning. I know it’s supposed to reflect my heritage, but I still hate it so much. Well, my parents told me a few weeks ago that, if I wanted to, I could change my middle name as a Christmas present. I am so excited! I’ve been pouring over name books and websites (found this one in the process) and have made a list of my favorite middle name options. I was wondering, could I get your opinions on them? I will paste my list in the first comment. Thanks in advance, Monica

These are all Irish/Celtic/Gaelic because I thought it’d be nice to stay with an Irish middle name for my mom’s sake (and for heritage sake).

Monica Blair Pritchard. Blair means “Meadow.”
Monica Bridget Pritchard. Bridget means “High goddess.”
Monica Eileen Pritchard. Eileen means “Song bird.”
Monica Errin Pritchard. Errin means “Peace.” Note: Pronounced exactly like Erin (Air + in).
Monica Leslie Pritchard. Leslie means “Garden by the pool.”
Monica Rheanne Pritchard. Rheanne means “Flowing stream.”
Monica Shea Pritchard. Shea means “Esteemed.” Note: Pronounced Shay.
Monica Treasa Pritchard. Treasa means “Strong.” Note: Pronounced T’reesa (T sound + Reesa).

And a few others (non-Irish/Celtic/Gaelic) that I like:

Monica Lauren Pritchard. Lauren means “Crowned with laurel.”
Monica Danielle Pritchard. Danielle means “Judged by God.”
Monica Renee Pritchard. Renee means “Reborn.”

Honestly, I can’t imagine changing my name for such a silly/selfish reason. It’s not a bad meaning. It’s a name you parents picked out for you because they love you. Have you ever thought how much you might be hurting them because of all this "I hate my name because it means shoe" drama? I think it’s really sad. Especially since it’s not a bad name at all.

I’ve talked with my parents over this before and have asked them about their feelings. They told me why they chose it (heritage sake), but said that if I really didn’t like it, then they were okay with us changing it. I didn’t ask to change it (I just don’t like it); they were the ones who offered it as a Christmas present.

I like Monica Bridget and Monica Shea. I personally agree with the first reply. My middle name is Breann, and I hate it as well, but would never change it. I hate it because its spelled wrong. My parents can’t obviously spell because they named my sister Kayle Lea. And Kayle is misspelled too. Kayle gets constantly called Kyle, Kale, or Kayla because her name isn’t spelled Kaylee. But despite that, I don’t think she would ever legally change her name. She just goes by Lee as a nickname to compensate. Good luck!

embrace your name. a name change won’t change who you are. It’s a silly gift to want and even if your parents offered it, it came from your complaints. It’s a middle name. It’s not a big deal.

And, honestly, changing it is not a big deal either. We are all okay with it. I asked what you thought of my favorite middle names because it’s hard to choose just one.

I don’t need any more suggestions, but thanks anyway. I’m mostly wondering what your impressions of my favorites are.

imagine... your parents went though all of this to choose your name and you’ve decided you don’t like it because it means shoe. What a childish waste of time.
posted by guest :: 13 years ago | report
No, that is not the case. I disliked it before I knew what it meant (I said that in my post). I personally very much dislike the sound of it. When I found out what it meant, that added to my dislike, but it did not start there.

I like the name Brogan. But if you do decide to change your name, you should ask your parents which name they like.

According to babynames.com Brogan means Badger. I don’t know if that helps though...

Thank you for that suggestion. That’s a good idea. I will ask them what they think of my favorites. At this point, I am still trying to narrow down my own favorites though. Thanks.

And according to www.babynameaddics.com it means "Shoe." I don’t really like the "badger" meaning either though.

I understand wanting to change your name my name is Lora Elizabeth. I don’t mind the Elizabeth part or even the Lora part what I do mind is the spelling of Lora..I am changing it to Laura.
I love the name Blaire with Monica

Love Monica Blair or Bridget. I think I like Bridget best!
I don’t mind that you’re changing your name, i’m just wondering why it really bothers you that much, surely you don’t use it THAT much. I know someone with middle name Mafanwye (Mah-fan-wee) it’s welsh, and she HATES it, but she’d never change it because how often are you really going to tell people?

My husband has a habit of saying our sons whole name when he tells people his name. Thachary Alexander..(he is proud of it) So we use his middle name a lot..May I ask how old the poll poster is?

i’ve never heard of it meaning shoe, i’ve always heard of it as meaning badger, but of your name list, i like Bridget best

Sorry, I had to leave for a little while (am babysitting my younger siblings).

I am 17 and, as I said above, I simply really don’t like (hate) the sound of it. To me, it sounds really bad, and the meaning (whether shoe or badger) doesn’t help either.

Sorry to correct you but Treasa is pronounced Trassa and is quite a popular name here in Ireland. I like it a lot by the way.
