YES vs. NO

My sister in law plans to name her son Athan if and when she has one (not married yet). I have long wanted to name my son Nathan (she is aware of this). Should I go ahead with Nathan? If she has a son she WILL name him Athan regardless if there is a cousin with almost the exact same name.

I knew a boy whose name was Nathaniel, and his nn was Than (rhymes with man).

Go ahead and name your son Nathan. I bet your SIL will end up re-thinking her weird idea to name her son Athan because she’ll be so used to her nephew Nathan by then that naming her own kid Athan will feel like if you’d named your kid Robert and she named her kid Obert. Just silly, kwim?

Anyway, not to worry -- if she does have a kid named Athan, you still have the kid with the normal name and she’s got the kid with the peculiar name.
