I agree! Hubby says it sounds like snobby rich old lady.

Yes it is, epecially this spelling of Madelyn. I prefer the simple Madeleine. It looks less trendy and ages better than Madelyn/Madalin/Maddielynn etc.

I think its more snobby spelled Madeleine, I love Madelyn and Maddy for short!!!

Madeleine is pronounced LINE NOT LIN isn’t it, from what I’ve read!?!?!
posted by guest :: 13 years ago | report
Yes, I see it on here alot
posted by guest :: 13 years ago | report
what does it matter? Same difference just whatever the mother prefers!
posted by guest :: 13 years ago | report
Yeah, but it is a pretty name. And less overused than Isabella, Emma, Olivia, etc.

Besides I’d much, Much, MUCH rather meet 25 Madelyn’s than a Briley, a Brinley, 4 Brooklyn’s, 2 Trinity’s, a Lyndsi, a Kynli, a Kenley, a Tenley, a Brinley, a Brynleigh, a Kaydence, a girl named Kyle, a girl named Spencer, 2 girls named Logan, 3 girls named Hayden, a Kenzie, a Destynee and a Dymund.

Seriously... bring on the Madelyn’s.

YES DEfinately AGREED!! I hate all these new made up names!!!

The eighth poster made me laugh:) I agree with them too.
posted by guest :: 13 years ago | report
Ok we will clear this up now, does the original poster want it MadeLYN or MadeLINE??
posted by guest :: 13 years ago | report
whats the diff between these new "made up" names and having 5000 emma, emily, grace, olivia, sophie, etc. I would rather have a kid with a unique name than one that they have to go by a last name initial in school cause there are 6 emma’s in their grade.
posted by 85444 :: 13 years ago | report
well i agree with that too, thats why i like unusual names.
posted by guest :: 13 years ago | report
and just because they are spelled different than the traditional spelling doesnt mean they are made up.
posted by 6411 :: 13 years ago | report
EXACTLY!!!!! I dont know how many people on here say they are made up just because they havent heard it before or because of the spelling!!!

8th poster here again...

Because these new "made up" names are crappy. For one thing, they all sound the same. Alivia is made up and "unique", but, my God, she’ll still be Alivia C. when there’s an Olivia P. in her class. For another thing, a lot of those names are hard to pronounce. A lot are hard to spell. A lot make it difficult for people to know if it’s a boy or girl... or even worse, set up the expectation of a boy, when in fact, it’s a girl. I have an unusual name myself, and it’s a real nuisance to have to correct people EVERY time I meet someone new for my ENTIRE life... not just in school, but at every job, with every client, with every boss, with every neighbor, in every church, every time I meet someone new, ever... and I am 32 years old. I’m sick of it. And quite frankly, my name is a BREEZE compared to some of these complicated configurations people are naming their poor little girls these days.

I am with you on one point, though, I’d much rather have a kid with a unique name than for my child to have to go by an initial as well. That’s why I love names like Laurel, Stacia, Bronwyn, Carys, Claudia, Robin, Wren, Tova, etc... names that are NOT overused, but that also don’t look like I just made up the name playing Boggle or throwing around Scrabble tiles.

A lot of these names have gotten ridiculous, quite frankly.
posted by guest :: 13 years ago | report
yeah they have but Laurel, Bronwyn, Carys & Tova are also made up! So dont jump everyone elses case when ur still using made up names ok.
posted by guest :: 13 years ago | report
carys is not made up - the other’s might be but carys is definitely not made up
posted by guest :: 13 years ago | report
ok but seriously who would name their child Tova or even like the name Tova - REALLY??

8th poster again here...

Newsflash: Laurel, Bronwyn, Carys and Tova are not "made up"... each has a long history of being used as a name.

Laurel is an English plant name, the name of a tree, actually.

Bronwyn is a variant of Bronwen, a Welsh name that means "white, fair, blessed."

Carys is a Welsh name that means "love."

Tova is a Hebrew name that means "good."

You don’t have to like these names in particular; my point is that there are many, MANY options out there that AREN’T overly popular, and AREN’T just pulled out of thin air... some of which you’d hate, and some of which you’d love if you ever considered them.

Some "made up" names are nice... Jonathan Swift "made up" Vanessa for a poem, for instance, and it’s lovely. But the gems are few and far between... especially these days.

still I could pull a name out of thin air and somehow find a meaning behind it, I totally agree I hate all the made up names nowadays but these I havent heard and I could come up with any name that I love and it become very popular fast and it be made up. you cant help but wanna make up your own name sometimes after hearing all the usual and ridiculous names, and what does it really matter if its made up?? I dont think it does.

What is with these MADE UP NAMES??? Jenny is made off of Jennifer does that make it a made up name?
posted by 2111 :: 13 years ago | report
I know thats what Im trying to get across to this woman??? Thats what I was saying even if it is made up why the heck does it matter & she says they dont have a meaning behind them & I say I could pull a name out of the sky & throw a meaning behind it so whats the big deal ya know!

8th poster here...

Whoa, whoa, whoa... don’t go putting words into my mouth, lady. Not once, not ever did I say that "made up" names weren’t good because they didn’t have meaning behind them.

The ONLY reason I made a post explaining the meanings of the names I had listed was because you insinuated that I had created them, that they were separate from any particular culture and had not been used widespread... which was not the case.

And the term "made up" is an imperfect term... "made up" didn’t originate in my post... somebody ELSE used that term, and then I used it as well, because we all know (approximately) the set of names referred to by that term, in the text of this conversation. Obviously all names originated at some point... they were all "made up" whether it was last week, a hundred years ago, or a thousand years ago.

I explained that my problems with "made up" names are as follows:

A) May not solve the problem they were intended to solve... changing the spelling to make it unique does not make it sound any different.

B) May be hard to pronounce.

C) May be hard to spell.

D) May not clarify gender, or even worse, make the reader think the WRONG gender.

E) Create a lifelong nuisance for the child, which I have tremendous personal experience in.

I think these are valid points. There are some modern day "made up" names that are worth the trouble... but they are few and far between.

By the way, the reason I did not initially respond to your last post is because you contradicted yourself:

"still I could pull a name out of thin air and somehow find a meaning behind it, I totally agree I hate all the made up names nowadays..."

What? In the middle of your argument, you throw in that you "totally agree" and "hate all the made up names nowadays"? Okay, then... great.

8th poster. You are well spoken ( or written), and I agree with you one hundred percent. My name is Taryn, which is actually a " made up" name ( Tyrone Powers made it up by combining his name with his wife’s, but somehow has become acceptable in the mainstream world. But some of the new names and spellings are just so silly sounding ( to me). Madelyn is at least classy sounding.
