First Child vs. Two Possible Last Names.

Hi, my boyfriend and I are expecting a little girl and we are looking for names. Unfortunately, we have no decided whether we want out baby girl to take his last name or mine so we are looking for options for both last names. My last name is Abshire and my boyfriends is Reagan. Suggestions? Please don’t judge our situation.

You could hyphenate the last names.

Abshire-Reagan
Reagan-Abshire

Brad and Angelina’s kid’s last names are Jolie-Pitt. I think hyphenated last names are a great option for unmarried couple’s kids.

Here’s another idea... use one last name as her middle name, and the other as her last name.

I wasn’t married when my son was born; we gave him his dad’s last name for a last name, and used my last name as his middle name. The theory was, if we got married, we’d all have the same last name... or, if we didn’t get married, he’d at least always have the same name last name as one of us. If he’d had MY last name as his last name, then when I got married, I’d be taking that husband’s name... and he’d no longer have the last name of either of us. Plus, by using my last name as HIS middle name, I’d someday have the same middle name as my son, since my maiden name would become my middle name upon getting married.

To date, we never married, nor have I married anyone else. Sometimes I wish we’d reversed it, and used my last name as HIS last name, because I get tired of school administrator’s, doctors’ receptionists, etc. calling me Mrs. Theirlastname, but I know I’m not the only one. With as many children born to unmarried parents, or whose parents divorce and remarry others, many, many children do not have the same last name as their mom’s during school years.

I love the name Reagan. You could use that as her first name, that way she’ll always have it.

You could do something like: Lucy Reagen Abshire?

Or maybe...Kylie Marie Abshire-Reagen. I wish you the best of luck!
