surnames for vs. given names vs. ????

Hi, I have a bit of a bizarre question. My husband absolutely insists that our son’s name be a surname, but I think they’re all absolutely hideous. He won’t go for anything normal like Thomas or Aaron that can be both, so I’m wondering if anyone knows of any surnames that would sound good as given names? Maybe ones I haven’t thought of or heard of? Thanks a bunch!~Norah

He might go for Mason...most of the others that I’d like (Michael, William, Martin, etc) are too ’normal’ for him. It’s really difficult! I want a normal name, but I agreed to try to find a surname that might work for both of us. Any more suggestions.

I’d pick Taylor too. It’s a very standard surname but can also be a first name. And it’s definitely not girly. Just like all the other ’unisex’ names. All boy.

Of the 3 you listed that you liked I think Mason is the best. GL!

Try to convince him otherwise!!! It’ll just be horrible for him growing up! Can you imagine calling to your sun and saying "come here Sullivan" or "This is my son Carmichael" or "Hi Walker"

From the suggestions, the ones I kind of like are:

Mason
Bennett
Perry
Reed/Reid

I also like the more standard "first names" from the list, including Taylor, but we’ve already been over those and my husband doesn’t like them. All suggestions are big help at this point. Maybe in the same style as the 4 I do kind of like? I don’t really know what style that is, though...

Thanks again!

Ellis and Lewis sound ok. Someone suggested Mackenzie...I know Mac is sometimes used as a nickname for boys. Would Mackenzie be too girly?

I would suggest going to nymbler.com, typing in the 4 names you kind of like, and seeing what kind of suggestions you get from there. I’ve found that site very useful when trying to find names that fit a particular style.

I think Mackenzie is a little too girly.

I really liked Bennett, then your husband gets a surname name and you can have the nn Ben with is ’normal’.

Mackenzie is kind of girly and not a nice name in my opinion but Mac is OK.

Ellis is my friend’s son and he is cute! Another one you might like is Boyd.

Would your maiden name, or another family name make a nice boy name? Maybe if it had meaning for you, rather than being a random surname, you’d like it more.

Maybe there’s a surname with a "normal" nn you could compromise on, like Bennett nn Ben.

I feel for you... my ex was obnoxiously stubborn when it came to naming our son, and INSISTED that he have a name no one else would have... our son was four days old when we finally agreed on a name for him. Part of me wants to say, don’t let him push you around... it’s your child, too! But you don’t want to meet bullheadedness with bullheadedness... that will get you nowhere. Hopefully, you’ll find a name you love that meets his "criteria," but even MORE hopefully, y’all will find a name you both love, that you both savor saying, hearing, writing and reading.

I think the person who suggested McKenzie, Rose, Whitney, Cassidy, etc. misread the poll, and gave you last name suggestions for a girl, rather than a boy.

Mackenzie was the 69th most popular name for a girl in the US last year, and was not in the top 1000 names chosen for a boy.
