Ianto pn Yan-toe vs. Yes vs. No

Hi, we’re expecting our first son. We’ve gone with a welsh theme with our childrens names, honoring my heritage and family. We named our daughter Bethan after his Mother when she died, and I want to honor my father by calling our son Ianto, which was his name. My husband reacted extremely badly to this, saying that our son will be bullied and ridiculed for his name. We live in an area where creatively spelt names are nearly the norm, I don’t think Ianto will stand out that much between Mhykaiilay and Poxrter (Michaela and Porter, both real names at our nursery) , it means a lot to me. Is he right? Is it a bad name to give to the baby? Thank you. Brynn.

If you have a daughter named Bethan, I think its kind of ridiculous of him to react so badly at Ianto, pricipally it being you father’s name.
I don’t think he will be more bullied for it than kids with made up/misspelled names such as you’ve said.
I say go for it. Try to talk to him. You did name your daughter after his mother. Let him choose the mn, use a common one. Call him Ian as a nn.
Go for it!

While I understand your frustration, I can also see your husband’s point of view. Just seeing the name Ianto, I was unsure how to pronounce it or if it was male for female. It is understandable you wish to honor your father, but also keep in mind your son will have to carry this name and will constantly be explaining how to pronounce it, which ethnicity it is and why he has that name. Perhaps use it as a middle name instead?

I personally love the name, but I can see his reasoning. I only know how to pronounce the name because I love the character of Ianto Jones from a tv show. When I first saw it written down I could not figure out how to say it, and it took a while to get it right with an american accent (it sounds more right with a welsh one)
