Do you think vs. Lila is too "southern" vs. Baby is coming soon

My name is Sam and my beautiful wife is Hailey. We are about to be first time parents, as Hailey’s water broke at 2 am, and we are at the hospital. We both like the name Lila, but something about it sounds very southern. We live in New York City, so we want to know if you think people would share this assumption. I am very nervous to become a daddy. As for boys, we have a list. We would love some help. Tell us which ones you like best? God bless you. -Sam, Hailey and baby

Lila is a beautiful name, and if you don’t have a southern accent, it wouldn’t be southern name. Good luck :)

If its a baby girl then I think Lila would be beautiful! Sounds perfect, go for it. If you both love it then what have you got to loose, she’s your precious daughter:)
And if its a baby boy then I absolutely love Cooper or Emerson, both would be perfect for a perfect little son:)
Congrats and God bless you guys

Well, as "Southern" names tend to be a) exactly like the names everywhere else in the country (look at top 10 lists on the SSA website), or b) family names and surnames, and double names (Mary Elizabeth, Anne Tyler, Collins, etc), I would say that it is safe to assume that there are Southern Lilas and Northern Lilas--just as there are Midwestern Lilas and Californian Lilas. It’s not a name with a specific region attached to it.

I hope you use the name that you obviously love, instead of scrapping it over some preconceived (and completely wrong) stereotype of Southerners. And if she is mistaken as being Southern, take it as a compliment. Being a Southern lady is quite unlike anything else in the world, and it isn’t an insult to be called one.

This was not meant to be offensive, it was just some feedback we had gotten from family and friends. So sorry if anyone felt offended. Mommy is progressing well, I am so nervous! Hopefully our baby will be here soon! :)

I am from the South and have never met a Lila in 30 years. That just goes to show you how unfounded stereotypes can be.

Born and raised in Georgia, and I’ve only met one Lila. And her parents were from New York. I agree that it sounds simply delightful with a Southern accent, but, at least in my little corner of the South, it’s not used. That said, I’ve met several Lula’s and Lily/Lilly/Lillie’s, but only one Lila.
