Rowan Woods vs. Yes!!! vs. No!!

My husband and I are expecting a girl in early November. We really love the name Rowan and wanted to name her that but our last name is Woods, my husband thinks that we should find another name for our daughter because it will be too "tree" related but I cant find another name that I like more than Rowan. Should we think about another name or keep it. Please help!! - Angela

I don’t like Rowan for a girl, it’s all boy.

Personally I think having two tree names is kind of cute in this case... only because I don’t know that most people would automatically think of a tree when they hear Rowan. I didn’t, I had to look it up. If you wanted to name her Willow Woods, I would think it was a problem. I think it’s more concerning that the name doesn’t flow very well.

I do much prefer Rowan on a boy however. What about Rowena? I love that name for a girl, you can still use Rowen as a nickname, and then you don’t have the tree issue at all. I think Rowena Woods flows a lot better too.

To me Rowan Woods sounds like a location. "Hey. I’m going hiking in Rowan Woods today." A lot of unisex names paired with noun last names tend to sound like objects or places rather than human beings. I would reconsider if I were you. Maybe pick something a little more feminine.

Maybe Elowen, or Arwen? They sound similar, but don’t bring "tree" to mind (although Elowen DOES mean "elm tree", so it kinda keeps the spirit of Rowan without being too obvious!)

I think it’s overly tacky. It’s got the whole boy name and too tree-themed things going against it. I don’t necessarily think having a name that means "tree" paired with Woods is terrible, but I think that having a boy name for a girl that’s also a tree name paired with Woods is too much. I’d reconsider.

I’ve personally always loved unisex names. Rowan Woods is adorable for a little girl. It is a unique name but also doesn’t sound too masculine.
