? vs. ?

Maybe I am wrong, and I’m not saying that I’m not, but I always thought that a nickname was something that a child aquired growing up. (Such as a child who scoots instead of crawls and he gets the nn "Scooter") I also thought that it was supposed to be a shortened version of their given name. (example: Alexandria (Lexi, Alex) Donald (Don) ) etc.... Any thoughts? Am I right, wrong, or in between? Thanks!!! (P.S.--- I don’t mean to offend anyone by this, I am just wondering.)

Your right I guess, but what is the reason for this? And plus I know two Alexandria’s and they both go by Aly/Allie.

I am just wondering. I am not trying to offend anyone. And yes, Allie/Alli/Aly/Ali etc. is another nn for Alexandria because it’s a shortened version. I was just giving an example.

Okay, well I was just wondering the reason for this seeings how this is a baby naming site, but yes, most nn are required while growing up in some form. When my neice was in the womb, I called her Cherry because that’s about the size she was when I started calling her that. When she was born, People call her HaleyBug (her name is Haley Brooke) and I call her Brookie.

Alot of nicknames that are shortened forms of full names are mostly aquired by friends at school like I grew up with a; Kate(Kaitlyn), Katie(Katelyn), Allie/Aly(Alexandria), Steph(Stephanie), Val(Valerie), Becca(Rebecca), Em(Emily), Katie(Katherine), and so forth.

Nicknames can be aquired in many different ways.

I think a lot of parents and parents-to-be want to pick a name that has a nn that they like as well. I named my first son Jonathan James (after his two grandfathers) and we decided early on that we would use the nickname J.J. instead of Jonny, Jimmy, Nate, etc. I think that parents give their kids nicknames a lot, and sometimes when they’re older, other kids might add a different nickname as well. And who knows? When JJ grows up he might want to just go by Jonathan all the time! :)

I don’t really get what this post is about, but I’d say that for the most part you are right. I know some people who have a nickname that has to do with how they or their siblings pronounced their name when they were younger (my brother is one).

Another popular nickname would be boys who are the third and go by Tripp or Trey. Juniors going by Junior.

There’s also all the AJ, CJ, DJ, PJ, KJ, JD, JC etc.

Some people have nicknames that might seem random, but stem from when they were a child. I know a boy who goes by Buddy, and has his entire life, but it isn’t his real name.
