A vs. Confusing vs. List

Hey mommies! My husband and I have put the names we like into a list, however it’s a pretty confusing list. We separated them into three lists that I will post. Which do you like the best overall and with our last name? If you have other suggestions, feel free to comment them but our requirements have not changed. The names cannot start with the letters K, C, L, S, B, G, or E; they have to be old fashioned names with a nickname option; and they cannot be unisex or a boy name. Thank you SO much again and I’m sorry if we seem rude/picky, it’s been very hard for us to find a new name since we can no longer use Penelope! -The Kopitar Family

Names with nicknames already decided (do not give any other nickname ideas for this list):
Alessandra (Alice)
Anastasia (Ana)
Athena (Thea)
Imogen (Immy)
Matilda (Millie)
Rosalind (Rosa/Rose/Rosie)
Wilhelmina (Willa)

Names that need nicknames:
Amalice (dislike Molly)
Amelia (dislike Amy/Mel/Mia)
Aurelia (Ellie/Lia do not fit requirements)
Francesca (dislike Fran/Frannie/Chessie/Frescy/Francie/Frankie/Frances—we’re considering just getting rid of this name)
Juliet (Jude does not fit requirements)
Miriam (dislike Miri)
Ophelia (dislike O.P. and Lia does not fit requirements)

Nicknames that need full names:

Hattie (dislike Harriet/Henrietta)

Didn’t realize it until now, however the first name under ones that need nicknames should read "Amalia" not "Amalice"! We also like the nickname Delia (but dislike Delilah as a full name)

My fave from the first list is Wilhelmina nn Willa. Also like Immy and Thea.

Millie would also work as a nn for Amelia.

Julie for Juliet?

My cousin Miriam goes by Mim. Mimi would also work?

Aurelia (Aurie)
That’s my only idea based on your list... I don’t see other options for the other names.
posted by guest: Sara :: 2013-10-25 11:28:59 | report
I’m guessing since you don’t like the other full names that Adalia or Adelia wouldn’t work? But that would get you the nicknames Ada or Delia.

I like Athena. Very pretty and works wonderfully on all ages.

I would agree that you should probably get rid of Francesca just because it’s probably impossible to find any other nickname options. I’ve sat here thinking and thinking, but none come to mind.

Juliet is super pretty. My niece has the name and her father sometimes calls her Jules (sounds like jewels).

For the nickname Ada, I’ve come up with Adamina, Adara (which you’ve already said no to), Avada, Adalie (and yes it is an old-fashioned name, I checked), Adalyse and Adlina. Other options if you liked the full name Avada, could be Ava, Vada, or Ada.

LivvyTheMum, we really appreciate all of your ideas but PLEASE remember that we cannot use certain letters, and that includes for nicknames! We like Matilda, as it is already on our list, but would we have to spell it with the H for Hattie to work as a nickname?

Sorry, as soon as I posted it I remembered the letters! You could use just Matilda for Hattie.... Mathilda makes more sense but I still think it works! Millie is also good for Matilda and so if you choose it, your daughter will be able to choose what she goes by when she’s older and she’ll have a range of choice! I love Matilda! Good Luck!

Please do not try to change what we want for our child; as I have said, we have all of these for a specific reason. And while some may not be important to others it is important to us, so please respect that this is what we want. This poll wasn’t exactly created just for a bunch more suggestions; the main point was to see which people thought was best with our last name and if they liked a name that was from the list that either didn’t have a nickname or a nickname that didn’t have a first name to give suggestions for those. We were also open to ideas if people thought none of our names went with our last name. It just turned out that people gave more suggestions than saying which they liked from our lists.

Faith nn Fay
posted by guest :: 2013-10-25 13:17:57 | report
Our names that we are looking for nicknames for are from the first comment, we have agreed on using Millie as a nickname for Amelia (and possibly Amalia as well) and considering Hattie for Matilda too. We have only added a few to the list.

The reason we have said the ones we dislike are because we haven’t found any from the suggestions that we do really like; there have been a few but for the most part we hadn’t come across anything. So I’m not really sure how to give feedback other than saying we didn’t like them?

We still haven’t found a nickname for Aurelia, Francesca, Juliet, Miriam, Ophelia, and Helena. And we haven’t found first names for Ada, Delia, or Pippa

Imogen (Immy) Second best option, as Imogen is a favorite of mine.
Alessandra (Alice) is cute but I don’t really care for Alice as the nickname.
Anastasia (Ana) doesn’t really seem old-fashioned to me, sorry.
Matilda (Millie)- I like and seems to fit your criteria
Rosalind (Rosa/Rose/Rosie) - Don’t really care for at all
Wilhelmina (Willa)-Don’t really care for at all

Of the names that need nicknames:
Amalice (dislike Molly)- You could use Alice as a nickname and you do like Alice as previously state. I do not particularly like the name, reminds me of head lice. Sorry
Amelia (dislike Amy/Mel/Mia) - Millie is a cute nickname and I think you stated that was an option. Amelia is a pretty name but VERY POPULAR.
Aurelia (Ellie/Lia do not fit requirements)- You could use Aria as a nickname. Very pretty name.
Francesca (dislike Fran/Frannie/Chessie/Frescy/Francie/Frankie/Frances—we’re considering just getting rid of this name)- That’s basically all the nicknames for this name and probably should just throw out b/c I don’t think there’s another option you like.
Juliet (Jude does not fit requirements)- Julie fits the requirement but I don’t think you like that one, nor Jules. What about Uli, yes it’s a real name. It’s not an American name but I know a lady on Project Runway who was named this and it could be an option, if you liked. It’s a pretty name.
Miriam (dislike Miri)- Only other nickname I can think of is RiRi, and I’m sure you won’t like that. I don’t personally care for the name.
Ophelia (dislike O.P. and Lia does not fit requirements)- a favorite of mine and you’ve turned down every nickname option everyone has come up with. You’ll probably chunk this one out to. When I wrote O.P. I meant Opie or Opal could be another nickname option.
posted by guest: Christy :: 2013-10-25 13:27:35 | report
Christy, if you look at the second comment, you’ll see that I meant Amalia rather than Amalice (not exactly sure why I typed Amalice!).

We have agreed that we are going to get rid of Francesca we’re fairly certain any and all nicknames for it have been suggested and we don’t like any of them. We do not like Julie, Jules, or Uli and cannot find any other nickname so this is one we plan on tossing as well. We dislike RiRi a lot, sorry.

We do like Aria (though it may be a stretch from Aurelia?) and we are warming up to Opal as a nickname for Ophelia. We are also not too concerned with popularity as our children have semi-popular names as well
posted by guest: Poll Posters :: 2013-10-25 13:31:19 | report
Of these nicknames that need full names:
Ada (dislike Adelaide/Adeline/Adaline/Adalee/Adela)- Really wish I could have helped you on this one, Ada is an absolute beautiful nickname or name and I personally like every choice I gave you as a full first name option. Probably going to chunk this one too, as there aren’t any other options there.
Dottie (dislike Dorothea/Dorothy)- I dislike Dottie but love Dorothea nn Thea.
Hattie (dislike Harriet/Henrietta)- I love Hattie/Haddie and gave a suggestions of Hadley but you stated it was too trendy. I disagree, Harper is way more popular along with being unisex and is more widely used instead of Hadley. Hadley is just cute.

We dislike Dorothea, as stated behind Dottie so we wouldn’t use it as a full name for Thea. Thea was originally on our looking for full name and someone had suggested Athena, which was the only full name we liked for Thea. Hadley is too trendy for us, just because it is being used more than Harper, doesn’t make it any less trendy. It does not fit what we are looking for-it is actually unisex which we do not want and it doesn’t hit that "girly/elegant" factor for us

I really like Ophelia nn Opal. I think I like it so much b/c of the "lia" sound it makes. I hope that makes sense, I love Delia but don’t have any other choices to give you on that one either. Delilah is the only one that fits your criteria, Cordelia (which is awesome) doesn’t. Sorry
posted by guest: Christy :: 2013-10-25 13:37:38 | report
We’re the exact opposite as you, so I guess that makes both of us weird? We really like Amalia but we don’t like Malia!

My opinions on the names you like:
Athena (Thea) Quite nice, I not a fan of Thea though this is only my opinion.
Imogen (Immy) Imogen is quite popular, I don’t mind it though...)
Alessandra (Alice) Love the name, though nn is quite plain in comparison
Anastasia (Ana) my favorite! By a long way!
Matilda/Mathilda (Millie, Hattie) Also my favorite as it has more than one nickname which is important!
Rosalind (Rose) I’m not much of a flower name person so no.
Wilhelmia (Willa) no offense, but I really don’t like this one... It’s too long and it sounds a bit drab in my my opinion.
My favourites from best to worst:
Anastasia
Matilda/Mathilda
Alessandra
Athena
Imogen
Rosalind
Wilhelmia
