Total loss vs. On name vs. For baby

I’m at a total loss on names for my baby, we aren’t finding out the sex so it makes it harder finding names for both. The main trouble, at least with the girl names, is that there are far too many across a range of styles that I like and can’t seem to narrow day to the perfect one. As for boy names I really have no idea as I come from a family of girls, however Daniel, Michael and Alexander are names that I DON’T want to use for personal reasons. Please help suggest some names for both and how you narrow down your list of names. Thanks, Cate.

The Top Baby Name is...

Total loss 0% (0 votes)
On name 0% (0 votes)
For baby 0% (0 votes)

Since you’ve got a girl list, even if it is really long, why don’t you post it and get opinions. Or ask what other people would narrow it down to.

Ideas for boy names:

Everett
August
Gideon
Leo
Lincoln
Quinn or Quinton
Sebastian

I didn’t have a lot of trouble narrowing down my list. That’s what my husband was for - we ended up on a name that was one of the few he would agree with me on.

One way we narrowed it down was to write a list of all the ones that were acceptable to both of use.

Then we looked at an possible negatives to any of the names. Sometimes the negative wasn’t much of a negative or it wasn’t enough for us to take it off the list. But there were negatives that took names off the list.

Then we looked at spelling. If there were a ton of ways to spell it, it was just giving the child a headache later in life. (Haley, Haylee, Hailey, Haylie, etc.) Of course people can stick random y’s into any name, but we were looking at names that were commonly spelled different ways.

Popularity was another factor for us. Check out the social security baby names page and it gives the popularity of any name through #1000. If the name is outside the top 1000, go to ourbabynamer.com. They have names into at least the 3000’s. We didn’t want anything too popular (top 50 or so).

All that usually narrowed it a bit. But the most important thing is really liking a name and really feeling a connection with it. It’s kind of hard to describe.

Say each name with your last name out loud and sometimes you notice some just sound awful when paired together or you don’t like the sound of it. Write them each and see how they look written. Then pick your 20 fave and show them to your husband and let him narrow it more. GL!
