Romany for a girl? vs. Yes vs. No

My fiancé and I are expecting our first baby in 2 months and wanted to name her after a place that’s special to us. We met in Rome and he proposed in Rome and we plan to have our honeymoon in Rome. Do you like the name Romany for a baby girl? Any middle name suggestion? Phoebe & Andy

I’d be careful. I quite like the sound and I understand why you want to use this name but Romany is classically associated with gypsies. You could easily offend someone or bring prejudice upon your daughter.

I like it. I love names with personal meaning, too. Roma is lovely and would work, too. I don’t think the Romany/gypsy thing is a big deal at all.

I think it’s cute but also agree with the first poster. You could name her Romilly nn Romi?

I agree with poster 1. I do like it but I wouldn’t use it. Romilly is a great suggestion from poster 3 and that nn is super cute!

When I saw it I immediately thought of Romani Gypsies. There is an enormous prejudice against gypsies in Europe and even in America too. I don’t think Romany is the best name for your daughter. Romilly is cute and so is Rome as a middle name, or you could just give her an Italian/Roman name. Its a subtle connection but it might be more wearable for her and she might enjoy it more.

I’ll admit, I did think of the gypsy connection. But I guess I don’t share that enormous prejudice. It didn’t turn me off at all.

But I do still think Roma would be a lovely alternative. I prefer it to Romilly.

Romany is also a Hindi name. Associated with the Hindu religion.

I love Roma or Romy as an alternative

Have you ever considered Romilly? It is used on here and on children all the time! Plus it has cute nickname options, Romy and Millie, while still incorporating Rome. Romilly Jane is perfect!
