Adoption vs. Help

So, we are considering international adoption. We were wondering if any of you have adopted internationally and if so, did you name the baby a name from the culture you adopted he/she from or did you totally name it something regardless? Thanks!

hi there :) I personally did not adopt internationally, but I know a couple who did. They adopted a little girl from China and named her Bridgett. Congrats and Best wishes :)

My husband and I adopted 3 little girl from France. We named them Colette, Jacqueline, and Arabella, because they’re beautiful French names but recognizable in the USA. Hope this helps.

I haven’t adopted but would love too. I know people who have and they kept the child’s first name and made it their middle name.

I knew a family who adopted 10 (yes 10) kids from different countries in Africa (not at the same time, of course). They gave their children the opportunity to keep the name they had before they were adopted or the couple chose another name with the child that they were both happy with, since the kids were anywhere from 2 to 14 when they were adopted.

There was another family I knew who, too, adopted from Africa but they only adopted two, a brother and a sister. The brother was 8 and kept his name but they changed the younger girl’s, who was 2 at the time, name.

It depends. If the child was named by the birth family, I’d keep that name as either the first or middle name. If the child was named by a doctor or orphanage worker, I might not keep it. Also it depends on age. An older child who is used to that name might want to keep it or an anglicized version of that name. An older kid’s opinion should definitely be important in a decision like that.

I also feel strongly about putting a family name from the adopted family in the name somewhere. Specifically a family name of a person the child will know, not a great grandparent who’s already passed on or something like that. Names can be important symbols of belonging.

We adopted two children internationally, a boy from Columbia and a girl from Haiti. Our son was 4 when we brought him home and already knew his name so we kept it. We loved his name anyway (Sebastian David). Our daughter was just about a year old when we got to bring her home. We decided to make her given name her middle name and give her a new first name (Olivia Garcelle). Personally, we prefer to keep a connection to their culture, but usability plays a factor as well as the age of the child. If Liv had been old enough to recognize her name, it would have remained Garcelle whether we liked it and thought it was usable or not.
