Lucille and vs. Aunt Lucy vs. Too weird?

My husband and I have been debating names for months and the only one that we agree that we both love is Lucille. However, I have an aunt named Lucy and I’m concerned that it might be weird and/or confusing to have a Lucy and a Lucille in the same (fairly close) family, especially if Lucille decides she wants to go by Lucy when she’s older. What do you all think?

I think it will be fine. (FYI, technically, Lucille is a diminutive of Lucy.) Just make sure that Aunt Lucy is someone you really like!

I have a great aunt Lucille who goes by Lucy. However, your daughter could go by Cille or LuLu if Lucy is confusing.

I shouldn’t think it matters at all. I don’t imagine your aunt would be upset about sharing or that you see her every week anyway.

I think that’s fine. If you want you could attribute some honour to the aunt in the name, if not then that’s still fine. I have 2 Pauls, 2 Michaels, 2 Phillips, a Francis & a Frances, and 3 Michelles in my family, only two are namse in honour of another!

I think it’s fine, unless you have something against that particular aunt, or if you think your parents will be offended that you chose that name instead of theirs. For example, we like the name of my husband’s uncle (it wasn’t THE favorite name, but was on the list), but we decided against it partly because we thought it would be weird to use the uncle’s name instead of my father-in-law’s. But if that had been the only name my husband and I loved and agreed on, we probably would have gone ahead and used it anyway. Go ahead- it’s hard enough to find a name two people agree on!

I don’t think it’s too close for an aunt (or great aunt) to share a name with a niece. If they were close cousins or something like that I would change my mind. Lucille is a lovely name by the way.

My daughter Juliet has a paternal and very close aunt Julia. It’s fine, honestly.

I think the Aunt would assume Lucille was named after her. I also think it would be super confusing because I’ve never known a Lucille who didn’t go by Lucy.

Lucille is gorgeous and I think it’s absolutely fine to use with an Aunt Lucy.
