Some people may assume the nickname but usually I think people will follow your lead and call him what you call him. When he gets older it will be his choice which name he goes by... It’s not unusual for parents to wind up being the only ones who use their child’s full name. At least when he’s young I doubt it will be an issue though.

Unless you are of eastern European descent, and specifically going for the spelling to honor that culture, spell it Nicholas. Save him the lifetime of headaches spelling it out constantly.

As for the nickname....the older he gets the less control you have over that. Peoe will naturally try to shorten it, not just to save time and effort, but to show familiarity and affection to him. My son is named Jack and my parents are constantly trying to shorten his name and fi d a cutesy nickname.

When he’s small you will be able to correct people and ask that he be called Nicolas, but as soon as he starts school, its game over. The other kids will shorten it and that will be that.

I definitely prefer Nicholas, as that’s how everyone’s going to assume it’s spelled and Nikolas looks both foreign and trendy. And yes, I do think most people will assume he’s called Nick.
