It is absolutely pronounced Mada-line when spelled Madeline, it is not personal, it is the proper pronunciation of that spelling. When people pronounce Madeline as Madalyn, they’re mispronouncing it. For the name Mada-lynn, the spelling is Madelyn.

My personal favorite variant of this beautiful name is the original French version, Madeleine which is pronounced Mada-leen. I also love the variant Madeleina. Out of Madeline and Madelyn, they’re both beautiful but I prefer Madeline a lot more.

We named our daughter Madeline, we’re pronouncing it Mada-LINE, which I agree is the proper pronunciation. But everyone that we introduce her to has called her Madelyn, even mispelling her name to Madelyn, sometimes even after I have corrected them. It has left us frustrated to the point where are considering changing her name to Madelyn. I don’t want my daughter to have to grow up with burden of having to constantly correct people who mispronounce and misspell her name.

My name is Caroline, so I’ve dealt with this too...Caroline obviously has -line as the ending, but I get people all the time asking if it’s care-oh-lin. Nope, that’s Carolyn, a completely different name. Caroline is care-oh-LINE in English, ca-roh-LEEN in French, and ka-roh-LEE-neh in German. Same thing with Madeline...Madeline and Madelyn are two separate names. There is also Madeleine.

Madeline: mad-uh-LIEn (English pronunciation), mad-uh-LEEN (French pronunciation)
Madelyn: mad-uh-lin
Madeleine (French): mad-uh-LEHN

Holy cow, I totally feel posters 2 and 3. My name’s Caroline as well and even after I introduce myself, people will actually correct me too and ask if I’m sure my name isn’t Carolyn...geez, a lot of people aren’t very bright. Agree with all of the comments above: Madeline is mad-ah-lie-n and Madelyn is mad-ah-lin.

Yea. I agree that if you name your child something ending in LINE, you should pronounce it like that. You learn this in elementary school. "The "e" makes the "i" say it’s name!"
Madeline = MAD-UH-LINE.
Madelyn = MAD-UH-LYNN

I agree that both are pronounced just as they are spelled but my favourite is the French version Madeleine which is pronounced Mad eh lain (not ..een at the end!)

The classic Madeleine - or nothing - is my opinion.
I agree with last poster about pronunciation not being -een in the last syllable too.

I pronounce them both ways. MADA-lyn is my favorite pronunciation, but spelled Madelyn.

Pronunciation depends on the spelling.

Madeline = line
Madelyn = lyn
Madeleine = lehn

I agree with Madeline- ’line’; Madelyn- ’lynn’ and Madeleine ’Lehn’. Madeleine is my favourite of the 3.

I think it depends on what country you are in. Madeline is almost always pronounced as mada-Lynn in the US. What about the French Madeleine pronounced Mada-Lain? That’s my personal favorite.

Madeleine is NOT pronounced Mada-leen. Look up the French pronunciation. It is pronounced like the last poster said.

I would say Madeline as Mad-uh-line. I would spell it Madelyn or Madeleine to get the Mad-uh-lyn pronunciation. Both are pretty sounds, but it drives me crazy that no on ever knows how to say it based on spelling.
