Unique vs. Elizabeth vs. Nicknames

Hey, I’m looking for some unique nickname ideas for Elizabeth! My husband really loves the name and I do want to try to make a compromise and have the name work; so I am in search of a nickname. I’m looking for nicknames beyond Lizzy/Libby, Beth, Eliza, Liz as those are too boring for me. Any ideas?

I think you pretty much summed them up, sorry. It’s great of you to compromise but you should try to find a name you both love too.

Ellie, Elle?

I’ve met so many Ellie’s and the name Elle itself has been pretty ruined for me unfortunately.

Something about Izzy doesn’t sit right with me, I don’t really know how to give a good explanation of what exactly but there’s just something about it...Sorry!

Bette ( I think this one is so vintage, funky, and fun)

Please look at the few suggestions I have listed in the poll. I do not want those.

How exactly is Bette pronounced? I kind of like Elsa, Liesel, and Ettie!

Sounds to me like you don’t like the name or any variation of the name.. So please move on and find a name you BOTH like. You don’t like any nickname options so what’s the point?

Effie is kind of stretching it, but I met a little girl who used this nickname for Elizabeth and I thought it was cute! Also, maybe Zella? It’s a Polish nickname for Marcella, but I like it for Elizabeth too!

Bette is pronounced like bet. Or it could be Betty, I guess.

I can’t believe no one has said Buffy! I love that one!

You don’t need to be rude, if you don’t want to actually help then please just move on from my poll. No one is forcing you to comment on here. I’m sorry for also wanting my husband to be happy with our daughter’s name. Obviously there are other nicknames besides the common ones since people have been suggesting them. So please move on, thanks.

I used to really like the name Effie and then the Hunger Games changed my "view" of it. Zella is really cute! As is Lilibet and Lilia!

Maybe Essie? I used to work with a woman named Tess which was short for Elizabeth. Not close to the full name, but apparently her sister couldn’t say Elizabeth and somehow shortened it to that. The only other name I could think of is Lizette or Lisette. Good luck!

Lilibet and Essie are cute!

You know, there’s another way to compromise. How does your husband feel about different forms of Elizabeth? Like...

Elisheva (Hebrew)
Liesel (German)
Lizaveta (Russian)
Sabela (Galician)
Elspeth (Scottish)
Elisavet (Greek)

Unique while still keeping your DH’s love for the name, hopefully?

I know there are other ways for us to compromise; however I also know how my husband feels about this name, and I also know there are reasons behind it. Liesel has been growing on me since one of the previous comments (not sure which at this moment) and I would consider using it as a nickname for Elizabeth

Oh, okay. Just wanted to make sure to cover all the bases. :)

How about Abby? I think that could work as a nn. Or even Bee/Bea?
posted by guest :: 9 years ago | report
The more I say Bessa, the more it’s actually growing on me! Bea is also short and sweet too! I’d also like to apologize and say sorry if I have come off rude (or in the future). I appreciate all the help, I truly do! This process has been very long and I’ve been very tired and my hormones are out of control lately. And I know that doesn’t excuse rude behavior however I’d just like you all to know I do not mean to be rude to any of you on purpose (or at all!)

I don’t like Ellery or Ibby, sorry
posted by Poller :: 9 years ago | report
Don’t worry! You haven’t been rude at all, you’ve been very pleasant. :)

...I’d post a nn option, but I can’t think of any more. ^^;

Eli? I know it’s boyish but it could work.
posted by JackieLee :: 9 years ago | report
That’s okay! I’m actually surprised of how many different nicknames were suggested! Part of me really wanted to find a nickname so Elizabeth could work...but then there’s the selfish part of me that was hoping I wouldn’t (Sorry babe!!!!!) so we’d have to find a new name!

Like the nn to Elijah^

Eli is too much of a boy name for me, sorry!
posted by Poller :: 9 years ago | report
What’s her middle name going to be? You could always go by that.
posted by JackieLee :: 9 years ago | report
Maybe Babs?
posted by guest :: 9 years ago | report
Her middle name will be Jean, after my mother, and while I love my mother so much; I don’t really want to call my daughter Jean
posted by Poller :: 9 years ago | report
We actually have a friend with the nickname Babs (comes from his last name) so I find it a little funny that it was suggested! While I love the Babs we know, I don’t think I could call my daughter the same name (even if it’s a nickname) as him
posted by Poller :: 9 years ago | report
Breezy could also maybe work?
posted by JackieLee :: 9 years ago | report
How about EJ, then? I think initial nicknames are adorable!
posted by guest :: 9 years ago | report
I’m actually not a big fan of initial nicknames, not really sure what it is about them...I’m not sure if it’s the look or the sound? But there’s just something about them that doesn’t sit right with me. Breezy is okay, definitely unique but not sure if it’s something I’d call my daughter

Effy or Bea
posted by guest :: 9 years ago | report
I think all possible nicknames have already been mentioned, but I really like Liesel, Elsa, Lilibet, Essie, Zella , and Bea. Elsa might be a little too common for you now, considering the success of Frozen. Bessarabia is pretty too, but it might get shortened to Bessie, which sounds kind of country to me. I really like Liesel though; it’s so spunky! Good luck!
posted by guest :: 9 years ago | report
Oh i have one more idea. Thea?
posted by JackieLee :: 9 years ago | report
Elsa is cute, but the success of Frozen has kind of ruined it for me. Is Bessarabia pronounced "Bess-R-uh-B-uh"? Or am I way off? Right now I think Zella would be my top pick if I had to choose
posted by Poller :: 9 years ago | report
Thea is adorable!!
posted by Poller :: 9 years ago | report
So have you found the one yet? Or still looking?
posted by JackieLee :: 9 years ago | report
I know an Elizabeta who goes by Zita, as in eliZabETA. That might be too far from Elizabeth though.
posted by guest :: 9 years ago | report
I’m really liking Thea and Zella right now! I’ll be mentioning them to my husband just to see what he thinks (I do want him to at least like, if not love, the nickname too)
posted by Poller :: 9 years ago | report
Awkward, sorry, somehow my phone autocorrected Bessa to Bessarabia. I guess that means that’s a thing, but I don’t know what it is...ignore that!
posted by guest :: 9 years ago | report
LOL! That’s okay! I still like Bessa, but I don’t think it’s a top choice of mine at this point
posted by Poller :: 9 years ago | report
I once knew of someone who used "Beck" as a nickname for Elizabeth. Not one that I would have personally chosen but just thought I would throw it in the mix.
posted by guest :: 9 years ago | report
Zee???
posted by guest :: 9 years ago | report
How about using Elizabeth Jean as two middle names and finding a first name that you both love. Thea and Zella are cute though.
posted by guest :: 9 years ago | report
Zibby is a cute one I haven’t seen mentioned. My name’s Elizabeth and my nickname is Lily.
