help us vs. find a vs. name!

My husband and I are in the process of adopting a beautiful two-year-old girl. She is absolutely precious, and we can’t wait to bring her into our home. We are looking for a name for her, but we’re not completely satisfied with anything we’re finding. She has curly blonde hair and big green eyes. She’s curious and very smart and she loves to run and laugh. Can you suggest a few names for her please? Thank you so much! ~Cate

We’ve already decided that we will not be keeping her current name.

We kind of like Bridget, Lucy, and Chloe. But we aren’t in love. Thank you for the suggestions!

Well what is her name? Seems like that might be kinda confusing for her.

Perhaps you can use part of her old name, first or middle. Changing it completely seems harsh at her age.

I think you’re wanting to put an ownership stamp on this child. I would try to compromise with the current name because I wouldn’t want to mess up the potential bond with the 2yr old who already has a personality and a sense of herself. Try looking up versions of her name or even nicknames, you may find your answer there.

Her name right now is Trinity. We have tried to find a name that we like that is similar, and come up empty. So we moved away from that, and now we’re just looking for a name we like. We will not be keeping her name, even as a middle name. If it sounds harsh to you, I’m sorry, but she is our daughter, and she’s young enough that she won’t remember being called Trinity, even though there will be a change at first. We’ve thought long and hard about it, and as she is in our family, we will give her a name that we like, as though she is our biological child.

I like Rowan and Phoebe. Leonie is different, but it’s growing on me. I also like Harper and Piper, but hubby’s already nixed those. Hubby likes Ella and Emily, but I’ve been hearing them all over the place, and I’m worried they’re too common.

What about Elin? It means light. I think it’s pretty. In Greek mythology there were three Graces, since Trinity means triple, three so what about Grace?

As a family that adopts, you would be surprised what the children remember, especially if you choose to tell her that she was adopted. It is always helpful for a period of time just to call her Trinity. And then work the name you want to call her in for example Trinity Rowan. And then at some point drop the Trinity. The counselors we worked with encouraged us to keep part of our son’s original name but of course that is up to you.

We originally set out to find a name that we like that sounds as close to Trinity as possible. It just didn’t happen. Trust me, we started looking as soon as we decided we wanted to change her name. We’ve gone through so many books and websites looking for something that we’re running out of places to look.

I really like Elin a lot, actually. I’ll definitely run it by my husband. And Wynn is kind of cute, but I don’t think hubby will like it.

Try taking a couple of the names you like (Bridget, Lucy, Chloe, Rowan, Phoebe, Leonie, Elin) and running them through an engine like nymbler.com or nameberry.com. They suggest names based on what names you like. It can be very helpful.

If you like Leonie, you might also like Leona (the female version of Leo). Rowan and Phoebe are beautiful though.
