Emerald (yes) vs. Emerald (no)

I want to name my daughter Emerald, but my MIL hates it. I was planning to call her Eme (said like Emmy) but that still doesn’t make the cut. I don’t like Esmerelda, which has been offered as an alternative several times. I don’t want to be tacky, but I adore emeralds and their lovely deep green color. I thought it would be pretty but now I’m reconsidering it... What do you think I should do? (If you like it, I do need mn suggestions as well.)

I think it’s adorable and the nickname is so cute! I can’t stand Esmeralda at all. Here are some middle names:

Emerald faith
Emerald Grace
Emerald hope
Emerald Olivia
Emerald Bree
Emerald Paige
Emerald Marie

I too love precious stones and their beauty, but have you considered Jade? Jade is also a lovely green color. Also, what about naming her Jewel?

Hate Emerald, sorry. Sounds like a stripper name. May I suggest Emmeline (EH-muh-line)?

Emerald is cute. Here’s a list of other jewel names, if you’re interested:

Amber
Jade
Opal
Sapphire/Sapphira
Pearl
Gemma
Coral
Ruby (my personal favourite)

It does sound a bit tacky, sorry. Another alternative would be Emmeline which I think sounds so classy and beautiful. You could also have Emily or Emilia. Or maybe simply just Emme?

How about Emmeline Jade?

or Emery Jade?

I don’t care much for it. However, people name their children after metals, stones, nature, food, etc, all the time. (Opal, Ruby, Jade, Garnet, Beryl, etc.).

Love Emerald. If Ruby and Pearl can be a mainstream feminine names then I don’t see why another gorgeous piece of nature’s art couldn’t be as well. Cute nickname too. I’d stay pretty conventional with the middle name though (and not another noun):

Emerald Anne
Emerald Charlotte / Caroline
Emerald Frances
Emerald Georgia
Emerald Vanessa
Emerald Catherine / Katharine / Kathryn / Cathleen / Katrina
Emerald Julia
Emerald Margot
Emerald Susannah
Emerald Clare / Claire (Eng./Fr.)
Emerald Fiona
Emerald Justine
Emerald Hilary
Emerald Diana
Emerald Jocelin
Emerald Veronica
Emerald Audrey
Emerald Celia
Emerald Victoria
Emerald Jane / Jean
Emerald Sophie
Emerald Patricia
Emerald Candace

Does your husband like it? That’s the real question. Good luck! :0)

Personally don’t think it is terrible but I would never use it. I think it’s quite tacky. How about:

Emery
Emily
Emmeline
Emma
Emmalyn
Emilia
Esme

As long as you and your husband like it don’t worry about what your mother in law thinks.

I went to school with a girl named Emerald. She was very nice, funny, and smart. If you like it, go for it.
