Maxie: Better go with Minnie

Marley: Reggae master Bob’s surname was one of the biggest risers on the popularity charts for girls in 2008, with spellings Marlee and Marely also leaping in favor--though it has since halted its slide up the charts.

McKinley: Surname used as first for boys and more recently for girls too, riding on the popularity of such similar trendy choices as McKenzie and Kinley.

Maybree: Form of Mab. Madcap Shakespearean name of queen of the fairies, if you want something both adventurous and simple.

Kylie: Popular pop name, inspired by Australian singer Kylie Minogue; this year, Kylie is at Number 61. Younger sister of the Kardashians Kylie Jenner is undoubtedly keeping its style going.

Lainey: A kind of old-fashioned nickname name that’s enjoying some fresh life thanks to trendy brother Lane. Lainie is a more old-school spelling.

Landry: Landry is one rising surname name, often after legendary Dallas Cowboys football coach Tom Landry, that is given nearly equally to boys and girls -- though the boys pulled significantly ahead in 2011. But the y ending does give it a feminine sound (as opposed to the more boyish and more popular Landon). Land is a Landry nickname that might work for boys or girls.

Remi: Adorable name that’s fashionably but (still) quietly used -- although it may be gaining momentum: it entered the Top 1000 in 2013 and was one of the year’s fastest-rising names. While many parents prefer this spelling for a girl, the Remy version is perfectly appropriate as well. Girls given the Remi spelling outnumber those named Remy by about 5 to 4.

Kinley: This quick-moving name now resides at Number 205.

Sutton: Sutton is a classy-sounding surname name made feminine by Tony-winning Broadway actress Sutton Foster, that may be gaining popularity partly due to new hottie Sloane. It entered the Top 1000 for the first time in 2013, and was one of the year’s fastest-rising names -- it jumped over 200 spots since 2012.

Zia: A short and zippy name that would blend right in with but also stand out among a group of girls named Mia, Gia, Lia and Tia. One caveat though: in an Italian-American family it would be strange to have a baby named Aunt.

Zaylee:

Zola: When the Eddie Murphys named their fourth daughter Zola, it affirmed the up-and-coming status of the name, which has African roots, but also literary links to Emile Zola.

Finley: This was a 100 percent male name until celebs Jason Sehorn and Angie Harmon bestowed it on their daughter, recently followed by Lisa Marie Presley, who used it for one of her (female) twins. Now there are two girls named Finley for every boy. Finlay is also popular. Can Finleigh be far behind?

Emmi: With the enormous popularity of Emily and Emma, we’re sure to see more of Emmi, Emmie, Emme, and Emmy, whether as short forms or standing on their own.

Courtlyn:

Braylee: Combines the prefix of Brayden and the trendy -lee suffix, and has the marks of the popular Bailey. Braylee is currently at Number 567.

Avia: Form of Avis. Avis is a bird name that’s been in hibernation for awhile, possibly due to the car rental association, but it could make a return on the wings of Ava. Baldwin brother Daniel chose it for his daughter.

Ari: Still mostly a boys’ name, but works well for girls too.

None of them are really my style, but they are fine overall except Maxie, maybree and Landry. I think Landry sounds far too masculine, and too much like laundry. Maybree sounds too much like maybe, and Maxie just makes me think of maxi pads.

Most are too trendy for my taste. Kylie is only one I really like.

I like Marley, Kylie, and Lainey the best. Maybree sounds like maybe, Courtlyn and Braylee are terrible. Some of the others sound like nicknames.

I really don’t like them. They seem quite manufactured and trendy. A bit on the trashy side, in some cases.

Emmi is the only one I like.
