Is a popular name vs. really that bad?

My husband and I always had a love for the name Olivia. We think Olivia is a gorgeous name and we love the nickname Livy. But, our family and friends say that the name is too popular and our child will hate having a popular name. We love the name Olivia so much and we don’t mind that there are a lot of girls with the name, the little Olivia’s we met actually made us love the name more but we don’t want our child to hate her name. Is a popular name really that bad?

I think that as long as you don’t care it shouldn’t be a big deal. For some families, it is very important that their child’s name is unique and different so that it is recognizable as their child’s. But I think it is more important that you choose a name that you love, regardless of popularity. As long as you are ok with the fact that you will be meeting other little Olivias, I don’t think there’s a problem. Good luck!

It’s not bad for a name to be super popular. There is just more of a chance that your child meets several other kids with the same name. And just because she knows a lot of other girls named Olivia doesn’t mean she will hate her name. I also love Olivia, and the popularity was never a problem for me but it was for my husband, so we used Olivia as our youngest daughter’s middle name instead of her first. If you have no problem with the popularity of it and if you love it then go for it! There is nothing wrong with a popular name, Olivia is still gorgeous!

To me, it IS that bad. The more it is used, the less appeal it has. It becomes run of the mill and a decade stamp like Jennifer of the 80’s. It loses the awe factor and gains the eye roll factor. Some may like blending in the crowd but in this day and age, there is emphasis on individuality. Obviously, we are all individuals regardless of name but it sure won’t feel that way when she is Olivia + surname initial of 5 in every cl[removed]he has until she graduates University. See, parents mainly only please themselves since none of us will actually know if our children will remotely even like their given names for quite some time. But we all must weigh our likes with the facts of society and see if we really care about what our child may or may not want to deal with as they will be the one going through it. I’d prefer just Liv, Livvy, Livina, Liviette, or Livia instead.

I’ve only known one Olivia my whole life, and she’s an adult. But now they’re everywhere and it’s like an epidemic. Like, people, there are thousands of names to choose from. Do you want Liv in a class with 5 other Livs?!

You can always check out the Social Security baby naming site, if you live in the States. It will actually tell you the ranking of Olivia for your State. It might not be as popular there as you think.

Thanks everyone!

Like we said in our post, we don’t mind that there are many girls with the name and the little girls we met with the name Olivia, we met 4, made us love the name even more, and we don’t mind the fact that she might be in class with 5 other girls with the name same name. The problem is we don’t want our child to hate her name and people say she will if we give her a popular one.

I would choose another name, it’s not fun sharing a name with half the class at your school.

I guess we should give up our favorite name since it seems like a lot of people are against using a popular name on a child. It’s going to be hard since we do love the name so much and no other name has come even close to the love we have for Olivia.

Thanks everyone for your comments.

Use it as a middle name so she can have your favorite name while being able to have an actually special name. GL

Use it as a middle name. There are lots of beautiful names that go with that one.

I think people blow the whole there will be 5 in her class thing out of proportion. My oldest son is named Noah (#9 the year he was born), and he’s in kindergarten. Out of about 600 kids he’s the only Noah at school. I do receive compliments on both my sons names, both in the top 10, mostly from older people.

You also can’t compare name popularity to what it was in the 80s to what is now, for example in 1980 Jennifer was given to 3.2% of babies, and Emma was given to 1% last year. If it doesn’t bother you that she might have another Olivia in her class, then go for it!

Care to give the percentage of Olivias’ for 2014 to actually make a point? Tit for tat, it’s still overused. Use it and don’t feel bad since many people do. Be part of the herd. She’ll skate along without an eyelash batting at her name. Don’t expect many oohs and ahhs at birth directly about her name though. She will be celebrated not the name Olivia.

^^^ Honestly, who cares? You must really crave attention if that’s how you think of naming a child.
Olivia is a lovely and classic name, timeless in its appeal, hence its so-called popularity, but that popularity tends to be regional, it’s almost non-existent where I am and maybe where the OP is, it’s not all that common either.

As someone with a popular name, I can say wholeheartedly, that yes, I do hate my name. Olivia is very pretty, but it really loses its allure when there are 12 other girls with the same name. And every time you meet someone new, they always chime in with "Oh my daughter/granddaughter/niece/etc is also named Olivia.
