What’s Your Opinion on vs. Maiden Names as vs. Middle Names

How do you feel when a woman uses her maiden name as her son’s middle name? Particularly when it’s obviously a surname? I’m considering doing it, but some people I know have discouraged it and even called my maiden name ugly, which I find quite rude. I mean, John Ritter’s middle name was Southworth, which was his mother’s maiden name. Rob Lowe’s middle name is Helper, which was his mom’s maiden name. How many of you even knew that? Probably not many because middle names are hardly ever used. I have a friend whose middle name is Lyles. That’s got to be his mom’s maiden name, right. So why is my maiden name getting picked on? If it helps, my maiden name is Higgins.

I think using maiden names as middle names is great. My second middle name is my mother’s maiden name. And middle names are hardly ever used so I say go for it! :)

I love them them used as part of a child’s name. And I actually really like Higgins

I personally don’t see the appeal, but I wouldn’t disagree with someone who wanted to do it.

I love the practice of incorporating a mother’s maiden name, or even another family surname, into a child’s name. The exception would be if the surname in question is really hideous, which Higgins is not. Ignore the naysayers.

The only way I would use my maiden name as a middle name...or first name...is if I actually liked the name. Unfortunately, my maiden name is hideous, so I wouldn’t use it, even as a middle name. So I guess it would depends on how much you like Higgins. I think it might be something that your son might not want to tell people.
